Tbf, the national dex is not small, only the number of new designs is small. Old gen pokemon are still relevant and do apparently naturally live in Alola.

You'll enjoy the series more when you're older. You won't worry so much about dex size because you won't have time to. Instead look for the comfy parts of a game and don't put too much thought into it. They're like popcorn movies at this point.
