at best, you will be able to call them with something similar to the ride pager. you register them but they don't function like normal pokemon

I played the demo and I can see totems being moderately challenging if you aren't using the exp share. Keep in mind that in the demo you are overleveled and your Greninja is orders of magnitude stronger than anything else.

I thought this gen was going to be the solution to revamping old shitmons like Girafarig, Purugly, Granbull, and such that desperately needed alternate forms or stat changes, but we didn't get it.

We really need less focus on past gens. As weird and goofy as Gen5 was, I appreciated a "new" adventure where I could catch a totally different group of pokemon, where Gen 1 trash didn't litter the streets.

Out of the now seven generations of Pokemon games, Gen 5 is the only one where you didn't see a Geodude, Magikarp, Psyduck, or Zubat. It was unique.

Gen7 looks to be more of the same in terms of Gen1 pokemon being fucking everywhere and the new pokemon being on the backburner.

I get that feeling too. The Ultra beasts definitely stand out as alien in a pokemon world, more than Deoxys anyways. I can't quite put my finger on it, but their designs definitely look like the team went out of their way to make a set of creatures that would look out of place when standing next to regular Pokemon. Gotta give the art director some credit for that as the team probably have guidelines on how to get a "Pokemon" look when designing new creatures and they probably intentionally ignored them to make the UBs.

That's why I like them. Deoxys looks like an alien, but it also still maintains that Pokemon look.

The UBs don't even look like Pokemon, which is why I think they're so interesting.

Yeah, the UBs are quickly becoming my favorite part of the prerelease season. After 20 years of sticking to the pokemon designs, the artists were free to make something completely different. It's also fun to think that maybe some of these design ideas actually came from earlier Gens but they couldn't get them to fit with the Pokemon style without sacrificing the artist's vision. I'm probably getting ahead of myself, but either way, the creative freedom behind the UBs brings me a lot of joy.

It feels uneccesary, now i understand that "OH IT'S A MONSTAH HUNTIN' GAME WHY WOULDN'T THEY BE CATCHABLE?" but the way they were promoted and the entire plot revolving around these things INVADING and not just being part of the world felt like they were legitimately going to be rad bosses that lend their power to defeat their leader and the overall big bad or some kid-friendly message bullshit, but now it's all but coming straight from john gamefreak's mouth they kinda feel a bit dull... well whatever in the end, i don't have to catch them anyways hopefully...

I still have hope you battle beefed up of them and catch them with the aid of a special item that limits/stablizes their power or something, handing the player a more balanced for use version; I don't think that is likely to happen, but I still want to believe GF isn't retard enough to have a bunch of boss battles that aren't more powerful than regular pokémon. Since the totems have stat buffs and the ally mechanic, they at least acknowledge that battles against one pokemon need a twist.

The most difficult thing about battling a legendary is not killing it. And since they keep stressing the plot relevance of the UBs, I think there will be battles against them during the story before you can capture them, like Kyurem in BW2.
