I want the people calling for "more Pokemon!" to realize something.
With the supposed new amount (including both UBs and Alolans), we are at 821 Pokemon total. That's a humongous amount of unique models for a 3DS of any model to handle. Not to mention that it's a lot for kid (their target audience) to remember.
Reducing the numbers of Pokemon introduced each generation is a good call.
