How to progress in PTCGO, tl;dr edition:
>complete all Trainer Challenges for loadsa packs to kickstart your collection
>play through using basic decks to unlock them for versus play
>grind prizes/coins on Versus Mode theme ladder
>enter theme format tournaments whenever possible using coins
>using your winnings from the last two steps, enter ticket tournaments. You'll get tradable shit from those
>trade packs/chests for the cards in a deck you actually want to build
>don't open packs before you have a solid deck, YOU EARNED THOSE, DON'T WASTE THEM ON SOME SHITTY HOLO RARE AND 9X KRABBY
>public trade is like the GTS, if you want proper results, put up your own offers
>occasionally the thread isn't entirely anti-social and can get you deals on cards

To see what your PTCGO stuff is worth right now, look for the PTCGO forums in the trading section.
>Your old IRL cards are probably fake or not worth caring about. Check TrollandToad, eBay, and TCGplayer instead of asking.

Probably not, it is not a legendary, it won't get 10 different cards. And it would be just stupid to repeat that cluncky mechanic anyway, even worse when you consider it's a stage 1 this time.

Sun and Moon looks like it's trying to wipe mechanics since EXs, Breaks, and Megas are gone. Maybe UB will die once FC rotates in 2018.
>>
>>29142103

But those are mechanics, not "basic staples" that almost every deck needs since we have no other reliable way to search for Pokemon. I fully expect we will see yet another "dump your hand to draw 7 cards" Supporter yet again when Sun and Moon comes out

...what, you think Ultra Ball has been around since Base Set? The game's twenty years old, and Ultra Ball was only printed in the first half of Gen V.

How do you think people searched out their Pokemon in previous formats?
>>
>>29142215
I actually don't know anything about Gen 4. Tell me.
>>
>>29142215

Bebe's Search, Luxury Ball, Celio's Network, Pokemon Communication, and others?
>>
>>29142103
The problem is, if they nerf the fuck out of trainers, you'll still have Sycamore for 2 years, Lysandre for half a year, VS Seeker for half a year, N for 2 years, Ultra Ball and such still around in every deck. If anything, expect buffs to trainers since what we have now is so good it's used in every deck skeleton.

If you want a look at how powerful the current support and item core is, go play legacy and see what it's like when you don't have Lysandre, VS Seeker, Shaymin or even Compressor. Each good deck in that format is built differently.
>>
>>29142234
A wide variety of consistency items and Supporters that leaned towards searching over heavy draw.

>>29142251
Don't forget Premier Ball, Poke Drawer +, Call Energy, SP Radar, Roseanne's Research, Pokemon Collector, and I'm sure there are more I'm forgetting.
But this is just Gen 4 stuff.

>>29142321
I play Legacy. Back then you had pre-nerf Catcher which is just a better Lysandre. But today, instead of VS Seeker, you can Junk Arm a Comp Search, or a Random Receiver and anything you get will be good since all the best Supporters are all draw options. It's not THAT different, especially compared to a truly different format like what you saw in Gen 2/3/4.

The thing is, Sycamore, Lysandre, Seeker, N, and UB are going to stay in rotation for the next two years NO MATTER WHAT. Even if the next generation of Supporters end up being comparatively bad, we'll still eventually reach a point where the current set will rotate out and the new cards will have at least one year to shine, and then we can work from there.
>>
>>29142486
Lysandre and Seeker are due to rotate out next rotation.
>>
>>29142560
I feel like we're going to get a VS seeker reprint.
>>
>>29142560
Either way, it doesn't what I said. All those staples listed will be used until the day they rotate, unless something objectively better comes along. And considering recent draw supporters consist of shit like Psychic's Third Eye, Misty's Determination, and Lass's Special, I doubt they're going to print something objectively amazing.

What are the odds of Kukui being an eight-card Sycamore, for example?
>>
>>29142963
I hope so, make my physical SR skyrocket in price.
>>
>>29142486

After looking at the Trainers that have a guranteed search for any non-specific Pokemon (as most cards have certain restrictions), they are mostly "minus" cards in a vacuum but there are mitigating factors for those costs (except Trevor since most people would prefer other Supporters in the format it is legal in)

Bebe's Search: -1 and uses your Supporter for the Turn, but the meta was relatively slower and you have PokePowers that draw cards to compensate
Pokemon Communication: -1 and requires you to have a Pokemon in hand to exchange, but doesn't use your Supporter for the Turn
Ultra Ball: -2, but it doesn't use your Supporter for the Turn and discarding cards can actually generate advantage
Trevor: +/- 0, but uses your Supporter for the Turn

Pardon me if I miss any other "searchers" that isn't PokeBall since that requires a coin flip
>>
>>29143782
I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to say here. Why are you comparing those trainers?
>>

Delays, fetches shit I need and forces the opponent to misplay energy and tools. He also has a frustrating soft lock with the energy removal cards if the opponent has pokemon that are expensive to set up. Essentially, he just ensures that Zoroark can do his job.

So far, my best matchups are against mega decks and I've gotten the most trouble with yanmega and greninja decks, as they don't really care about energy and retreat for free. So, malamar becomes useless and just sort of stares in horror as everything dies.

I don't think it's parabolic or that there's been creep, just more of a paradigm shift. We didn't really need cards like Juniper in Gen 4 because draw power was mostly mitigated to Pokemon abilities, letting trainers take a consistency role instead. This slowly flipped over time to where Supporters are our draw cards and we no longer could sustain draw Pokemon.

For an example of what I mean, look at the Worlds winners between 2010 and 2012, which is where the turning point towards today's meta happened.

In 2010, big draw cards like Oak's existed, but only one deck actually ran it and it wasn't even maxed. Instead, you saw Uxie/Claydol as your draw cards, then a huge amount of search and recycle trainers.

In 2011, Juniper was legal for Worlds, but only a single winner actually ran it. The other two used Magnezone and only 3x Oak, and that was considered enough. Then you see maxed out Pokemon Collector in all decks and 3x Twins in another; imagine a modern deck running 4x Brigette and 3x Teammates.

Then 2012 saw the end of draw support Pokemon, with only an odd Smeargle making an appearance. Juniper, Oak, and N are the only Supporters you see, normally maxed out with 1-3 Random Receivers in the pocket. This isn't because those Supporters are particularly powerful, but because we no longer really had any draw support Pokemon to use thanks to how oppressive Catcher and EX Pokemon were. If you spend multiple turns setting up a Magnezone, your opponent can just Catcher it out and take a free prize with a Landorus.

If it weren't for Catcher back then and the gradual power creep in Pokemon, or for the overall lack of draw support Pokemon in general, our current Supporter lineup would be more diverse and cards that aren't Sycamore/N would be used a lot more often.

I feel autistic for rambling about all this but there you go.

It went from
>Flip a coin. If heads, you may search your deck for any Basic Pokémon or Evolution card. Show that card to your opponent, then put it into your hand. Shuffle your deck afterward.
To
>Flip a coin. If heads, search your deck for a Pokémon, reveal it, and put it into your hand. Shuffle your deck afterward.
The first excludes some things like fossil pokemon.
>>

Ability: Inspect
Once during your turn (before your attack), you may have your opponent reveal his or her hand.
[C][C][C] Flying Headbutt: 100 damage.
[C] Gum Chance GX: 10+ damage. This attack does 50 more damage for each Energy attached to your opponent’s Active Pokemon. (You can’t use more than 1 GX attack a game.)

The attack also caps at 60 damage whereas the other one's attack not only starts at 60 damage with no cap, but can also be accomplished in a deck using DCE. And it has 40 more HP. That's the same kind of thing that the Raichu vs Galalie-EX comparison image.

To be fair Burn has been a thing in XY, but it rarely happened

>I think the Engrish translation is saying that burn will always do 20 damage and the coin flip is to cure it.

Yup, so it is basically this:

- If your Active Pokemon is Burned, it takes 20 damage inbetween Turns (instead of having to flip tails for it to happen)
- Afterwards you flip a coin, if heads your Active Pokemon is no longer Burned, if tails it remains Burned

I currently have 0 Shaymin-EXs, but I have enough packs to trade for 2 of them (enough for 3 soon).

However, I also have 5 trade-locked Roaring Skies boosters. I have ≈10,300 tokens which, when converted to packs, would bring me up to a nice round 56.

Do I go for the sensible trade, or the token blowout?

It's ability would have been something like this:

This is to counter Lysandre, Escape Rope, Ariados, etc.

It's not supposed to show that it's better, just that a lot of things literally haven't changed in twenty years other than the numbers printed for HP and damage.

If we had true power creep, Deluge would read something like
>As often as you like during your turn, you may attach a [W] Basic or Special Energy from your hand, deck, or discard pile to 1 of your Pokemon. If you do, remove 3 damage counters from that Pokemon for each energy attached this way. This Ability is unaffected by the effects of your opponent's Trainers and Pokemon Abilities.
But instead, it's almost mechanically identical to Rain Dance.
>>
>>29154419
Doesn't power creep just mean newer things are better? The degree of which is irrelevant, a slightly better version is still a better version. Regardless, I don't give a shit about the power creep, with rotations and stuff it's not really relevant. The only thing I don't like is how shit stage 2s are compared to EX cards.

Not at all. Gen III-IV pokemon do. Gen I pokemon are worse versions of modern pokemon.
>>
>>29157098
Muk is better than Garbodor.
Electrode is better than Evolutions Electrode.
Dark Vileplume is better than AO or HGSS Vileplume.
Blastoise is only slightly worse than Deluge Blastoise.
Alakazam and Reuniclus have the same ability.
Ditto is better than Ditto XY40.
Aerodactyl is the same as Archeops (maybe better).
Haunter's Transparency is better than Noivern's.
Venusaur has no current analogue (you can argue that Aromatisse is better for being a Stage 1, or Golduck Break), but we've had identical Stage 2 Pokemon (Meganium Prime, Klinklang, Hydreigon).
Drowzee is the same as Munna.
Dark Kadabra can be compared to Empoleon, being Stage 1 instead of 2.
Erika's Victreebel is the same as PRC Ludicolo.
Neutral Shield Mew is nearly identical to Evolutions Mew.

And these are off the top of my head. Gen I abilities had fewer limitations in most cases. A majority of the shortcomings come from the lower HP, and that doesn't really matter too much in some cases like Muk.

So I'm at Orlando regionals and I saw like 5 people playing some deck with AOR Gyarados.

>>
>>29157918
Which one?

If it's Full Retaliation, you can do up to 270 damage for a single DCE given a dream setup. Plus the AT.
If it's Aqua Tail, you could...pray for all heads to do 180?

They're probably just shitters either way.
>>
>>29157978
The Full Retaliation.
How does it do 270?
>>
>>29158109
4 Magikarp with 2 damage counters each from Magma Base or some other method. 30 x 8 plus the base 30 is 270 damage.

Even without Archie's, 3 Magikarp with 2 counters each is still 210 damage. And if you want to go full meme, put a FFB on those Magikarp so you can fit on an extra 4 damage counters for +120 more damage each.

From what I've seen, very few trainers are higher than Uncommon, other than full art cards, so ultimately the decks would probably be won by people who have the Uncommon but still relatively valuable trainer cards (vs seeker, trainer's mail, Lysandre etc.)

The bigger problem is allowing Gen 1 trainer cards, which were often ridiculously overpowered.

Trainers do have the same rarities as Pokemon, but in recent times Trainers that are Rare or above are not that common besides Full Art Supporters or Secret Rare Items

Orlando's results are way I kept shitposting about how "opinion tiers" are retarded and unhelpful and the only thing that matters is actual results. While everyone was on point that MMewtwo was the deck to beat and MFug was overrated,

>Scizor is the ultimate antimeta deck, it beats everything but Volcanion
>0 Scizor tops

>Volcanion is slow and inconsistent and just dies to Garbodor
>2 Volcanion tops

>item lock is dead, no good vileplume partners without compressor
>3 Vileplume tops

>M gardevoir is trash, gets shit on by Scizor and only wins against Mewtwo
>4 Gardevoir tops (maybe 5)

And my personal favorite
>Greninja is dead, no more poorfag deck, can't win against garbodor and everything has huge hp now
>4 Greninja tops
>>
>>29179726
The joke is, your opinion is based on imcomplete data. How many of those decks entered? Who piloted them? Its very possible that zero scizor decks top if the better pilots are playing other things or there just aren't any scizor entries. Additionally, Volcanion is very common and popular so its very likely that a number of those scizors simply ate the Volc/Typhlosion countermeme.

Its pretty easy to act smug about such a small sample.

The biggest difference here is that his "opinion" is based on DATA. Sure, it's only a single tournament, but it's still a TOURNAMENT.

Meanwhile, YOUR opinion and all the other shitters posting here have ZERO EVIDENCE AT ALL to back their claims. You can kick and scream and whine and complain all you want, having even a single piece of objective, non-negotiable evidence ALWAYS trumps having NOTHING, period.

Man, I'm a good 4 sets behind on PTCGO right now, i think Ancient Origins was the last set I traded for,

Playing catch up is gonna be a chore.

Yes and? Its still a fallacious conclusion based on incomplete information. You're too far up your own ass with this "us vs them" thing you can't think objectively.

Just gonna chime in and say I took a M Scizor deck to a UK tournament, just some local thing that attracted quite a big crowd from around England, and saw 2 others with M Scizor. 1 of them ended up unbeaten, and there were multiple M Mewtwo, 1 M Gard, a few Greninja Breaks, a Darkrai/Giratina and some other shit, even a Rainbow Road. No Volcanion though. I didn't play much myself, though. I know it's not comparable to Regionals in the US, but I don't think you can disregard M Scizor for it. Save rash judgements for later, nobody here is an analytic genius.
>>
>>29180247
Not the guy you were talking too, and I don't really care about the tierlist of decks either.
But I feel like I need to say that there is nothing more dangerous that someone confident on an opinion based on not enough data.

This is the reason you see those stupid headlines of inconclusive studies with a really small sample sizes.

With your data analysis process we can conclude that having a playmat is a good strategy, because most of the tops have one.

Guessing the top decks from a small sample of PTCGO games is equally invalid though.
>>
>>29180713
No one's arguing against this being a single tournament's worth of data.

The point is that there are two camps here: one with "insufficient" data, and one with NO data.
Do you know what's more dangerous than making claims off "insufficient" data? Making claims with literally ZERO data that go objectively AGAINST what little we already have.

And I keep putting insufficient in quotes because it's not like this tournament's results will magically stop counting once more are in. This data is 100% valid no matter how much people disagree with it.

Which AOR Gyarados are they using in the Orlando Regional?

The Ancient Trait one.
Use Team Magma's Secret Base to put damage counters on your Magikarp. With three on the bench, that's 210 damage for a single DCE, plus another 20 damage from Magma Base since it affects your opponent as well. You also have Theta Double to attach multiple Busting Balloons, Assault Vests, or whatever other tool you think is worth it.
He used a teched Meowstic EX to do the final 10 damage to M Mewtwo and other Megas for whenever Magma Base missed.

>>29181016
Link me to ANY objective, undeniable evidence that shows M Scizor is a viable deck worthy of being on the tier list.

I can link to evidence that shows it's not.

>The biggest difference here is that his "opinion" is based on DATA. Sure, it's only a single tournament, but it's still a TOURNAMENT.

This is a good point - results from official tournaments are relevant data. However, he could well be ascribing too much weight to one data point. He may well be right, or this could be an outlier.

>a single piece of objective, non-negotiable evidence ALWAYS trumps having NOTHING

I can't agree with this, unless you consider the significance you give that one piece of evidence.

Let's say I told you I could say a magic word that would make an ordinary coin land on heads every time. If I flipped heads on the first try and claimed this as proof, you wouldn't believe me. It's still a piece of non-negotiable evidence, it just doesn't mean much in isolation.

I think you definitely need to consider other points, such as:

- how many people played Scizor
- whether the 'good' players used Scizor

>>29179726

The other, non-Scizor, points are far more convincing. It shows that they were played and were successful. The presence of these decks is more solid evidence than the absence of Scizor.

I'm not necessarily arguing for Scizor here. I don't use Scizor and don't even play the TCG irl. I'm just a maths undergrad seeing people drawing too strong an opinion from insufficient data.

This analogy doesn't fly because I would be coming into that wager with pre-established knowledge on both the inexistance of magic and how coins work. More importantly, in that analogy, I'm trying to prove something wrong or right, whereas analyzing tournament results doesn't work that way.

Tournament results don't magically get discarded or ignored once new ones come out. New tournaments don't "disprove" old ones. If Scizor goes on to top the next tournament, we won't say "oh, Orlando doesn't count any more, let's delete that data". We'll say Scizor has now topped 1/2 tournaments, and we'll look at the next several to see if it's consistent. Only after several tops can one admit a deck is objectively good.

The issue is, though, that Scizor is currently sitting at 0/1 tops. Even if we discover that only bad players (or even literally no one) brought Scizor to the event, that still outs that top players didn't think it would be good enough.

More importantly, saying something like "there were no good pilots for X deck, so it didn't top" or "people just didn't bring X deck to the tournament" holds NO WEIGHT because that very same argument can be used for any other given deck. It doesn't have to be Scizor, you can apply the same logic to an Excadrill/Eons deck, or Dragon Fug, or M Ampharos. Imagine if I had said
>If Jason Klaczynski and ten other people brought a Beheeyem Break deck to Orlando, I'm sure it would have dominated the tournament! I'm sure it would have won, I win all the time on PTCGO with it!
You'd call me retarded because that's not how this works at all. At the end of the day, you're holding your own personal opinion over objective facts.
>>
>>29176065
fuckin perfect, thank you.
>>
>>29181418

>At the end of the day, you're holding your own personal opinion over objective facts.

m8, read the spoilered text. I literally do not care whether you think Scizor is good or not.

>Only after several tops can one admit a deck is objectively good.

I would agree. The problem is that >>29179726 is suggesting that 1 tournament proves that Scizor isn't good. Again, spoilered text - I'm not suggesting Scizor is/isn't good; I'm saying that forming your opinion now is pointless.

>This analogy doesn't fly

I know, but I couldn't quickly think of a more comparable analogy.
>>
So is AO Gyarados actually good or is it just a meme deck that is possible due to the amount of because of Volcanions? It seems like quite a bit of setup for the payoff.
>>
>>29181946
It's better than MScizor
>>
>>29181980
lmao nice one

also my boy yveltal stay winning
>>
>>29181946
It seems pretty fragile. Once you lose Gyarados you'll need to Super Rod it and the Magikarp back, search the Magikarp and play it to proceed. In theory this would be easy but you'll be dependent on Super Rod and Ultra Ball to get what you need when you need it. Plus if you run out of stadiums you just lose.

Overall it's a meme deck and nothing else but it certainly has win potential. It reminds me a bit of Mew/Shedinja.
>>
>>29182097
Pretty neat though that a Gyarados deck depends so much on super rod
>>
>>29181946

Like I mentioned here >>29162785 >>29162877, the deck could be doing well simply because people aren't sure what it does/how to play against it.

It does seem like a lot of work and require a decent amount of luck. The Magikarp are really fragile - they may only have 10HP when they hit the board.
>>
>>29182128
Yeah that is actually cute.

I forgot about Dive Ball, so I guess searching would never be a problem, but fishing out your Super Rod continuously (or using Karen I guess?) seems like it could be a problem.
>>
>>29182097
>>29182128

From what I saw on the stream, Buddy-Buddy Rescue seemed to be relied on more heavily than Super Rod.
