Planning for Pokémon began in 1989/1990, and it was ready to hit the Japanese market on December 21st, 1995, but Game Freak missed the shipping window, so Pokémon was first released February 27th, 1996 (though the copyright info at the start of the game still says 1995).

You know what makes me mad? They could had made something special out of Tamagotchi. They could had made it have better AI and way more things to do. More customization and a rechargeable battery. It would had been cool to see the infinite ways they could evolve as you breed newer generations.

Monster Rancher was a product of its time, and I don't think you could do another one that's even remotely as interesting as the old games were. Even if I were to go back and put Monster Rancher 2 on again, it wouldn't be the same since I have less than a dozen CDs laying around these days. Scouring through your parents' old CD collection to find a good monster on a random Billy Joel CD was integral to the enjoyment of the whole thing.
