Alas, there was no way Capcom would let two Mega Man characters through without their cash cow Ryu, and Rock deserved the honor more, much as I love Zero.

Well, Sakurai has expressed that he doesn't like to add new characters unless he can think of a gimmick for them, so I figure having Zero hold B to charge his special moves would appeal to that sensibility. But I'm sure there's any number of ways to execute Zero in Smash. He's the God of Destruction, after all. He's got any number of ways to whomp on Nintendo's best and brightest.

I couldn't really think of a better place to put this than here and I'm an artist (or autist you'll probably think by the end of this. Do you think a Pokemon comic about another trainer other than the ones we see in the games, in a story other than the ones we see in the games would be a cool concept? I know there is a lot of nuzlocke-esque comics that are fun in their own way, but I'm thinking something a bit more serious. I don't think I would have the time to actually attempt something like this but it's been an idea that's floated around in my head for a while. I know fan-made stuff can be really unappealing but I'd still like opinions that aren't just people telling me to kill myself for posting the idea.

I'm thinking of a story somewhat set in the game's canon but a little offset from the storyline (e.g. the protagonist would start after Red has already defeated Blue), with a lot of shounen elements involved and and focused way more on the development of the pokemon and battling rather than stopping an evil organisation or having legendary pokemon show up I'm sure some of that would have to happen to keep it interesting, but not just inserting a new character in place of the games protagonists. If it sounds very self-inserty, that's because it's entirely what it is, but I would try my hardest to not just make it "hey I put myself in the pokemon world." I've been writing the plot to an unrelated comic I want to do some day so I was thinking doing something like this would be a perfect way to challenge and practice for it. Pic related is one of my recent drawings.

But it's no more "self insert" than every side story already is. Stories have to follow their main character. That's how it works.
Just avoid having your character do any major things the game's protags are meant to do (taking down bad guys, catching box legendaries, etc) and you're fine.
