Doduo. The dodo is probably the most famous real life case of an animal going extinct, and Doduo is generally forgettable but would still speak to nastolgia by offering it a new form, like the Alolan forms.

It's also something that's already not super common, so people won't really miss the old form that much.

I never understood if pokemon gained the rock type upon being revived from fossils, or if ancient pokemon were simply vastly rock-like (the way most pokemon are water today).

Original fossils were rock type, because, they were hard shelled water critters and aerodactyl was clearly stone skinned. Afterwards, somebody said "shit, better make everything rock type!" and we got fucked over by everything being rock if it was a fossil.

When Aerodactyl Mega-Evolves into Mega Aerodactyl, it returns to its "original form" from before it became a fossil. It's still Rock/Flying, and even rockier than before.
