Not really? You don't need flash or dive, so as long as you've got some pokemon you're comfortable dumping cut, rock smash, and strength on, you should be fine.

I think you're only required to use an HM twice throughout the game
Once for Surf after the third gym and then Victory Road which needs a couple of them

Of course there are a fair few optional things you can do with HMs

XY is easy as balls and you can fly through it with literally any Pokemon on your team. Just pick the ones you like. Theres a lot of variety.

If you have Froakie, I'd suggest Charmander as your other starter, they balance each other out quite nicely
