Actually, that was FRLG that first presented it, bucko. And that's only in direct canon, it was brought up in adventures.

So it's been hinted at in FR/LG with the red hair line. Generations was the first time it's been out right confirmed in the English version of the game (if Generations counts as game canon) because they for some reason removed those lines from HG/SS during translation.
