The best plot twist would be if the UBs were actually just a red herring. Like, robots or something. And all the frightened reaction to them were staged.

The final dungeon would be a vast empty hall, with a bunch of giant test tubes with UBs floating lifelessly inside them. No music, just the sound of your footsteps and the eerie bubbling from inside the tubes.
