As a kid, whatever starter you pick, you will like it.
You start your game and get you first Pokemon. It will help you throughout your entire journey. It'll always be one of your strongest Pokemon. It will help you become the champion. No matter the design, after all that, in the end, it will grow on you.

I have no idea what it's like to just blindly use whatever pokemon. I don't want to know, either. You're essentially asking me to spend 50 forevers faffing about trying to find everything, and to even then be uncertain I HAVE seen everything, and to otherwise go through the game on shit and/or my starter alone. This is what you think pokemon is? That suddenly makes everything I've seen here make sense, but I never thought this way, ever. I am capable of playing a game completely blind, but they're usually platformers, things that any idiot could play through with no knowledge of any kind. RPGs, however, all require some form of knowledge of how the game works to even do anything. The only real exception I know are action RPGs, but that's mostly being due to trying to hybridize RPGs with other forms of games. You can still use skill to get through them. Normal RPGS, it technically isn't hard to know what things do, but the mechanics behind them can be a lot harder to understand. It's why I've been hesitant to press the matter to my own nephews and niece because I didn't know how RPGs worked when I was 10 either. (but that may have been because I had a sucky one that no one knows about) My mind is telling me pokemon shouldn't be that hard, but knowing everything you have to know to even understand to how to play is far too massive to recommend to anyone that doesn't already know RPGs. My sister and brother in law know nothing, and it would take me years to explain it. It may just be me, but I don't believe RPGs can be done blind. Too much cryptic shit and the necessity to have charts to even know what you're doing.

Besides, when I choose pokemon from a list, I am already picking the ones that I think look interesting with no real knowledge of what they do. I do not believe it affects my gameplay whatsoever. I'm still having to win using only what I have chosen. It's just that I haven't had to manually find them all and sift through them.

Last time I played an RPG with a huge world I made a map of the entire thing in MS Paint, including the first few dungeons (by the time I got to later dungeons I was strong enough to be able to fumble blindly without too much risk of death). And I enjoyed it, it was fun. I regret losing that map when I switched computers because I sometimes want to look at it and reminisce about the experience.

I've been planning on playing the original Fire Emblem on NES for a while, but the reason I haven't is because I want to make a big chart of damage values and drawing maps with enemy placements and who i can recruit and unit growths and such, one giant log of my playthrough (or playthroughs, I plan on doing an ironman run for my first playthrough of every FE game). No walkthroughs at all, just me, the emulator, and a bunch of Notepad and MS Paint files. It's going to be a fucking blast.

Charmander was already a bipedal lizard/dragon kinda thing and had fire at the end off it's tail to begin with, basically all that changed was that it got bigger, tougher looking and grew wings.
