Chesnaught and Delphox get left in the dust while Greninja gets a ridiculous hidden ability, a second signature move, a unique form and a spot on Smash. TOP KEK! The only thing Greninja has going for it is Protean, and it only became dangerous with ORAS move tutors over one year after Greninja was introduced. It wasn't particularly impressive in his actual game. Talonflame, Klefki, Yveltal, Aegislash and Xerneas all had higher usage, yet you never see anyone complaining about Talonflame, Klefi and Aegislash pandering.

He took TWO fucking years to even appear in the anime and graced the screen in less than 40 episodes even then. Hell, Masuda is a gigantic waterfag, but he already said in Twitter that Delphox was his favorite Kalos starter, so there's not even bias to take into account. As stated, even the Smash apearance was because of the team over at Sora liking Greninja the most, not because GF told them to put it there.

Greninja just happened to be the most popular of the Gen VI starters and managed to get into Smash Bros based on its design alone. I'd say it's more forced than Greninja, but that's over 4 generations. Greninja is quickly catching up in just 2. Not only that, but while Lucario's was the poster child to s mechaic given to many Pokemon, Greninja is given le speshill snowflake type of form that has only ever happened once before 1000 years ago (to another Greninja no less).
But above even those two, Pikachu is far above. It had a whole game based on it. You were forced to use it and didn't have a choice for another starter. You couldn't even evolve it. Red uses it as his ace despite being I evolved. And it was given a special item to make it stronger with an effect far surpassing any other mon exclusive item. Said item gives it access to its own signature move. It got not 1, not 2, but 5 new forms with Cosplay Pikachu. It's getting its own unique Z move in SM. And if you extend it to the whole line, there's Spikey Eared Pichu, Pikachu colored Pichu, Alolan Raichu, and Alolan Raichu's Z move. Pikachu shilling has been going strong since Gen 1, but people seem to give it a pass since it's the mascot.

Back on topic, I'm glad that Ash-Greninja will be demo-only, yet still disappointed that it made its way into the games.

You would be hard pressed to find someone who didn't consider Greninja as the best Pokemon of Gen VI even that very same October the game released, with its only rivals being maybe Sylveon, Tyrantrum and Yveltal. Charizard's main competition was Mewtwo, Dragonite and Gengar, but he remained as most people's favorite either way.

They managed to nearly replicate Charizard's success, with the core difference being that we don't live in the Age of Pokemania, so it was even harder to do something like it.
