The Z ring toy has me even more intrigued now. The JP release has a set that gives you 6 crystals off the bat: the 3 starter types, Electric, and two other types: Normal and Fighting. Now, the western release of the same toy has a package that comes with all 12 crystals that they're offering immediately, the other 6 being sold separately in packages of 3 in Japan. We also have these packages of 3 and the basic Z ring comes with the 3 starter types off the bat. (the JP one just has the Electric crystal) There is a funny thing about this arrangement. One of the sets of 3 had the other 3 crystals from Japan's deluxe set: Normal, Fighting, and Electric. 4 sets of 3. The starter types are known for all being on Akala. I find it interesting that they would come in these specific sets of 3, not to mention that the same orders occur on the display thing that comes with the deluxe set in Japan (seen here). The placement doesn't seem to have any importance, though, but it's the same groupings: the 3 starter types, normal/fighting/electric, and other side has the two extra sets of steel/rock/poison and ghost/dark/bug. The only ones we haven't seen offers for are the sets of 3 all along the bottom of the display: ground/flying/psychic and dragon/ice/fairy.

The evidence linking the Z crystals with the trials is overwhelming. There was even a golden pole with the z emblem on it seen when Gumshoos/Raticate ambushes the player. HOWEVER, I will stress that it's possible there may not be a trial for all 18 types. There may only be a certain number of trials and you find the rest of the Z crystals. The matter that there are individual Z crystals seems to support this unless they're the only ones hidden in the world.

First doesn't necessarily mean weakest. It seems like most of the trial captains - including the first one - won't even be fought, or at least not as part of the trials. In terms of battle strength he might very well be the strongest of them, even if his trial happens to be the easiest.

The part that has continually confused me about the matter is that evidently, you meet Gumshoos/Raticate in one area, but you fight them in another. As far as I can match it on the map, these two areas are on opposite sides of Melemele.

Regardless we do know Blue left the gym to study abroad already. Which may very well have been his own decision (he didn't really seem to be taking the job very seriously in the first place, after all) so it's not necessarily like he was demoted or fired.
Not like being a trial captain is any less important than being gym leader anyway.
Also, if he does happen to show up as a trial captain, he'll probably be able to be battled in the postgame at his full strength. Getting a different job doesn't mean he'd just lose all his old Pokémon.

That just makes me continue to question whether the crystals are just given out or if they are also driven by natural forces. Why not both? That is possible, but it would mean that Guzma could become a trial captain if not in name, but in function. I don't think he would be as miffed if that were so, unless he means to sabotage the entire operation and take it over personally. There is reason to believe this, but it can't really be confirmed. If so, then Gladion might have something to do with it.

I'm pretty sure Guzma will teach you the Poison-type Z Move. I think him not being a Trial Captain is not only a plot point for his character but also a hint to how distribution of Z-Crystals will be handled. I don't think Alola is big enough to have 18 Trial Captains, let alone each island having enough space or locations for 18 Trial Captains. I think only the types that were accepted have Trial Captains. Kukui might even be the one to teach you the Rock Z-Move since it seems like his partner Pokemon is Rockruff.
