NPC sometimes give away clearly mechandised pokemon and it creates a vague sense that there's a "canon team" like how Red used to get depicted with the same 6 pokemon a lot. No one likes to be told "your team of 6 magikarps isn't correct" even if it's in an extremely roundabout way.

I think the reason people care now is Kalos hands you a mega lucario, one of the most broken megas, on a silver platter directly after obtaining the ability to mega, and then forces you to use it in battle at least once.
