I was prepared to hate HTTYD from the trailers, since it looked nothing like the books. Then i saw it in theaters and was like "OK, that wast too bad". Repeat watchings have given me a much better appreciation for it, doing its own thing and establishing a unique world that was good on its own. I dont even care anymore about the books, never even read past the first one.
