I feel ya OP like, what if Geodude was originally Fighting type-type, but rare mutations caused some of them to be Rock-type? Flying-types would have killed off all the Fighting Geodude, leaving only the Rock-type ones we know and most likely have a neutral to negative opinion about.

What youre refering to is petrification of wood, and yeah thats what its based off, fossilised wood, they would have all been grass types millions of years ago but for some reason they began to fossilise and pass it on genetically.

I feel ya OP like, what if Elektross was originally Water type-type, but rare mutations caused some of them to be Electric-type? Grass-types would have killed off all the Water Elektross, leaving only the Electric-type ones we know and most likely have a neutral to negative opinion about.
