It's not exactly clear. Both Sun and moon have both day and night, just at alternating 12 hour intervals. However, that doesn't imply whether or not they are version exclusive or not. It does suggest that either game should have the mechanics to bring either about.

New images of CoroCoro have come out showcasing more of Lugarugan. In it, it shows the Midday Form being obtained in Pokémon Sun and the Midnight Form being obtained in Pokémon Moon. It also says that Midday Form has a move called AccelRock, which is a priority move, while Midnight Form has got the move Counter. We'll bring more as it comes

The only thing I'm 100% sure of, is that the first one isn't pure rock type. Going by its appearance it simply cannot be.

Fighting type suits the midnight form better. What about the midday form makes you think it will be Fighting? The midnight form on the other hand, can give you the impression of being a fighting type due to its swollen like paws which the midday form lacks, and the art showing the midnight form being able stand on it's hind legs.

Also, the midnight form doesn't seem to posses any features that would indicate it is part rock type, if it wasn't for it being Rockruff's evolution.

I wouldn't be surprised if the midnight form loses it's rock type and becomes dark/Fighting.

It shows them being obtained in the two versions because if you're evolving Rockruff in the middle of the day, it would be day in Sun and night in Moon. If you checked Serebii literally the day before you would know that Corocoro said they were dependant on day/night.

It is not outright stated that they are version exclusives, instead only showing them associated with their respective versions.

It never outright confirms that they are version exclusives as well.

It's possible that they are being shown with the two games since most players will end up with the Midday Form in Sun and the Midnight Form in Moon if they evolve Rockruff without knowing what they'll get due to the time differences.

I really doubt it, maybe in the next gen, but as of now it seems to be marketed as Sunruff's exclusive signature move. That's also why I think that they'll keep him mono rock like Rockruff. Sunruff gets a new shiny exclusive attack and Moonruff the rare, or even completely new, type combo.
