Each generation adds a lot of new features on top of existing content. This is the beauty of Pokémon, it keeps getting bigger. There are, as you say, a lot of people on this board who care more about "comfy" than the progression of the series, whatever the fuck that means. People who will condemn genwunners, but turn around and claim Gen 4 was the best because of the aforementioned "comfy". Every gen has things that it did best, every gen has things that it did first. Try not to get hung up on such things. I forgive gen 6's awkward transition to 3D because it paved the way for sun and moon which seem to be far more open, and gorgeous besides.
