Surprisingly, the lack of options were no issue. They had all that I needed to reflect a self insert, except for a certain type of hat. I settled for a basic black outdoors cap.

I played as the male character and regretted it because male trainer has the worst, least interesting customization. I don't care about "self inserting" or whatever retarded shit people who can't separate themselves from a fictional protagonist do. I just want the protagonist to look cool. Male customization let me down.

Playing as a guy I felt, like others in this thread, that I didn't really care for the lack of customization because there were a few good outfits I got that I liked enough. Still, I think it was because there weren't many good ones that I didn't care so much for it. Seeing Alola's selection makes me more excited. I'm probably going to have much more fun with that than I did with Kalos'. Who knows, maybe I'll even change clothes more frequently than the seasonal time I had for Kalos.

I played as a guy for my first playthrough and as a girl for Y ( which I have not finished yet )
I'm so proud of my look

The thing about male customization is there was a lot of bizarrely colored stuff that made no goddamn sense. Like, gaudy yellow and purple jackets or bright green hats. General selections were not great either, with a lot of them being the same shirt or pants in 3 colors.

Also, accessories sucked and you couldn't even wear sunglasses on your face.
