I'm genuinely afraid of something like this happening to me, which is why I've always backed up my savegames. I used to use an Acekard, but on the 3ds I was SOL for a few years.

But now that the 3ds is hacked I'm backing up my saves, emailing it to myself and storing it in the cloud so it never goes away.
