It honestly feels like Amourshipping was the first anime ship that many western Pokemon fans had ever witnessed (which really wouldn't surprise me since Pokemon seems to be many westerns fans only experience of Japanese anime and games).

The Japs knew from the beginning that AshxSerena wasn't actualy going to happen and went along for the ride, and as we see have already moved on to the AshxLille ship, but some of the western fans literally deluded themselves into thinking that Ash and Serena were going to be an actual couple and would end up fucking. Serena has growth a lot since the beginning of her travel with Ash. If she had a crush for Ash because he saved her when she was little, that is just her old point of view. She travelled with Ash and after all the thing they faced she learned who Ash really is, not just the image in her memory. The actual Serena loves him because she just fell in love with how Ash is (his strength, his kindness...), not because of her childhood crush toward him.

Ash is rushed to a hospital where they, in a 20 hour long surgery, try to restore his malformed face and they succeed but he's still in a coma.

Weeks later he wakes up and is "alright", but suffers from heavy memory loss as well as having his mental capacity brought back a few years.

His mother and Oak decide to send him to live with Oak's cousin in the alola region for a while so he can fully recover in a tropical paradise.
He does so and eventually feels quite alright again and so Oak's cousin suggests visiting the school he teaches at.
