How does /vp/ come up with nicknames for their Pokémon, assuming they do?
>nicknaming your Pokemon
>inb4 haha you don't name your dog 'dog' or your cat 'cat'
My pet isn't a digital monster

Whatever sounds right at the time. I'm usually rather lazy with it.

name websites or a random name generator.

why do you care?
Random bollocks. Often a name/word from a podcast im listening to.
While I breed/ train something I think about characters, monsters or whatever from other games that kind of fit to the pokemon in some way.
For example I called my Whiscash "Ceadeus", the last story boss of Monster Hunter tri. A giant fish creature that causes earthquakes all the time.

I look up the Pokemon's source animal and pick a vaguely-exotic English-sounding name from its scientific name.

I think of something stupid relating to their look / type
I choose random stuff, references to other things, people-that-I-know's last names, elements off the periodic table, mythological names, etc.
I want to share some but I don't know if anyone cares.

this
>actually nicknaming pokemon

First thing I think of becomes the name, even if it's something asinine like naming a Lilipup "Milkshake".
I name them after my co workers.
Then I go on battle spot and make my pokemon faint.
One of these days
>Playing on their existing names or an alternate naming
ie "Kabuto" as "Bushea", as in "Bushi" (samurai) and "sea"
>Removing/rearranging their names
Ie Nidorino as Nidor, Nidorina as Orina, Magnemite as Agnemi.
>Named after something from other media
IE Machamp as Cantor (a bipedal, multi-armed humanoid enemy from Xenoblade X) or Haunter as Spooky (as in Spooky Mulder)
Me again, here's a screenshot of some of them cause I feel like sharing.
I nickname in all sorts of bizarre ways; usually right on the spot and let the Pokemon grow into that name. Occasionally changing names quickly when I think of something better.
>real names of various origins (Steve, Senji, Kenai, Rita)
>misspellings of real names (Xander, Reed)
>outdoors, nature or real places (Jasper, Hudson, Reno)
>puns (Psyclops)
>nouns or animals (Mirage, Crow)
>names of characters in various media (Teto, Vash, Jekyll)
>made-up names that just sound pretty (Cascia)
>completely random words that just stick, usually for irony (Kaboom!, Elipsis)
I usually don't go too vulgar when nicknaming but I did name a Snorlax 'Fat Slut' in my FireRed nuzlocke. He died sadly; i was bummed.
A handful of meaningful sentimental names important to me, then I start naming things after stars. You'll never run out of star names.
mainly other video game series characters, enemies, bosses.
i named all of the pokemon i cared about in AS after mobs found in La-Mulana for example.

Usually I pick something that has some kind of meaning behind it. I don't usually use normal names though, I stick with like mythological names or adjective names that fit.
When hatching eggs, I use normal names and go down the alphabet.
