And as for best generation? That would be gen 3. In gen 3 we got:

No, Gen 4 didn't sell well for a reason. The box legendaries look like fakemon. The game is also filled with unobtainable Pokemon and marks the beginning of the cancer that is wi-fi exvlusive event Pokemon.

From the perspective of the veteran fan, DP lacks a lot of polish that wasn't seen again in a Pokemon game until XY. The game speed is painful. And the abundance of HMs is toxic.

Diamond and Pearl are actually the worst games. Platinum is standing very high together with Heart Gold and Soul Silver, with only Black/White and Black 2/White 2 above them.
The only thing about Gen IV which was truly amazing was physical/special split. As a gen, V is easily the best. No weak points.

Diamond and Pearl were flawed in many ways. They were definitely not the best games.

The best way to look at this is - which games were the best when they were released, and which are the best now (considering mechanical changes etc.)

The answer to the first is undoubtedly Gen 3, mechanically, in terms of plot and region, and in terms of flat graphical improvement. The next best would have to be Gold/Silver, followed by all of gen 5, and then gen 4.

The best these days is much more subjective. I personally think B2/W2 with challenge mode was the most fun, and R/S/E (now OR/AS) is the best overall.
