What are some of your considerations when making and fleshing out a character?

In terms of things like, how many pokemon could someone care for in the pokemon world? For example, feeding, training, and caring for 6 all of different types and natures may be hard work for anyone not in the top 1% or so of trainers, especially if these are all huge Pokemon like Aggron or Tyranitar or whatever. And would Pokemon that are ghost or dark types require different training methods? Things like that

Basically speaking, it depends on the story and the characterization of the OC.

For example, if the OC is a breeder, then would they know or care how to counter a certain Pokemon type?

If the OC is someone who owns a Pokemon but does nothing special with it, would they know anything outside of taking care of it?

Of course, trainers, specialized or not, would basically be the jack-of-all-knowledge.

This is not taking into account special circumstances, mind.

Attention for all within and looking to join the Discord group, as well as all trainers who've yet to RP within the Sileda Island setting!

We will be hosting and DMing a special Quest for newbies to try and give them a head-start in their Pokémon teams, character relations, and leveling. It will be about the length of one or two sessions, and go from this Saturday to Sunday. We might be looking at a party of 6 or so, possibly more since we have two DMs handling it. Now would be the best time for previously shy members to break from their comfort zone and start their character off in RP.

Details will be on the Quest Bulletin soon, but for now we know the location will be Myconie Path, will involve our villainous team introducing themselves a little further, and rewards will include any Starter in addition to a few other things. You will be told who to talk to for joining and other questions once you're in the Discord.

Depends on the types of characters you're going for. Tough looking with a heart of gold? They sound like the types who are reliable in their field so I can't picture them being punks.

Weezbro seems like he'd be the calmer of the two. Possibly a man of few words. While Kofbro grumbles about the scientists and their cushy jobs, Weez would step in and say it's not so bad. A living's a living and the pay is decent.

I wanna throw in that Weezbro was a science major/scientist himself at one point, but lab work didn't engage him so he opted for a more hands-on job. Kind of amusing, might explain his knowledge of scientific gear repair as well as being more empathetic towards scientists.

Judged on appearances while being good guys in their downtime is an optional trope.

Can't think of anything better at the moment, but there's a few concepts to tinker with or trash as you see fit.

I really dig these designs, by the way. Top stuff.

Since we've already seen plenty of times that the Pokemon world has its own entertainment industry and such, I have a whole group of pop idol OCs. They're based out of the country comprised of Kanto/Johto/Hoenn/Sinnoh (it doesn't have a canon name, so I've been calling it Zippon as a placeholder, a combo of the archaic "Zipang" and the modern "Nippon"), and perform J-pop (or Z-pop in this case). They were originally just a side part of a bigger Pokemon fic universe I was creating -- I was gonna write a novel-length original story actually -- but I ended up liking them more than the main characters and plot, so I scrapped everything and now it's just them.

I can't draw, but they're named Sister Galaxy and their gimmick is that they're supposed to be a Brady Bunch esque, wacky family of 15 sisters (not actually related), each with a different personality and quirk. They range in age from mid-teens to early 20s, and have all different personas and backstories, from the airhead from Pacifidlog Town adjusting to big city life, to the token half-Unovan one who speaks random English, to the runaway Joy who rejected nursing to chase her idol dreams. They're really cute.

I can talk more about them if you guys want, just ask questions and I'll come back and answer them in a bit. That helps me flesh them out, too.

White hair (Kiba) is a gym teacher and main character's mom. Purple hair (Komouri) was supposed to be a side character to block a pairing, turned out to be MC's best friend. But she's kind of turning into a female Brock and I'm confused.

If I had to give them a Pokemon background on the fly... I don't know, Kiba would probably be one of those generic NPCs sitting in their house with a Pokemon walking around. Maybe early on, telling you about type weaknesses.
Komouri... might be the "friendly rival" type? Getting really competitive, but at the same time that Noibat's never going to evolve.

Probably a little, but it's the only thing I tend to think about when I'm thinking characters in the Pokemon world. What sort of trainer would I be, what would I wear based on the areas I tend to hang out in, what region would I be native to. Those sorts of things. Whenever I play a Pokemon game I kind of self insert my personality onto the player character anyway so it just makes sense to me.

If I ever sketch it some day I might share the design around here sometime.

Contrary to popular(?) opinion, no it's not.

For one thing, when it comes to making an OC, the writing matters the most; a lazily-made OC can be saved with good writing, but a lazily-made writing will ruin a good OC.

In the end, it's all about finding the balance anyway.

The concept of my story was supposed to take place in a further future than any current canon. Urban sprawl has placed major cities right on top of each other, and wild Pokemon have been confined to reserves to preserve their species. The days of children traveling, training, and battling are over; education is now compulsory up to age 16. Every human "Soul Bonds" with ONE Pokemon at a young age (similar to Digimon, with how they're partnered), and unauthorized capture is illegal. The entertainment industry is booming, and young heirs to prestigious families who would have once been raised to take over their parents' Gyms, are now becoming socialites, reality TV stars, models, actresses, and of course, idols. Members of Sister Galaxy include the runaway Joy I mentioned, a descendant of Blaine, and a descendant of the founder of Vermilion City.

My pokemon team is something I have to figure out too. Probably going to have a lot of Ground-types since that's my favourite type. But after watching the Generations shorts I'll probably add a few based on utility as well.

Current basic draft is "hangs around in desert routes a lot (thinking Hoenn Route 111 specifically since the current favourite region. Also there's no Pokestraya)" so maybe I'd have some mons to aid with exploration and excavation. I'll flesh it out more as I go I guess.
