Rescue Team never really had much of a plot to begin with, besides the Ninetales arc. Everything that happened was usually disconnected from the other events in the game.

Well, that's pretty much all of the plot it had though. You say arc as if it's just a section of the game, but some of it is still in other parts of the game, like the beginning and the postgame.
Still, RT has the most original plot, since everything past Sky felt like it was trying to be a better Sky.

Let's have some more discussion on lore, settings and things like that as we had in the last threads. Would help bump the thread anyway.

So, let's say you were chosen to write the new partners personality. What would you make it?

I guess they'd start off as an outlaw, whom the main character has intense moral dilemmas over but is hopelessly attached to. It'd start a little bit like the hunted arc of Rescue Team, except your partner has kind of a hidden little base where they stash stuff and hide from the law. When I mean hiding from the law, I don't mean they fuckin murdered someone in cold blood or anything. Just a few petty thief things that landed them on the bad side of any cop that recognizes them. Since it WOULD be for a PMD game, and since it'd make them more prone to sympathy anyway-- I'm sure they'd have a good heart and would often demonstrate their kindness in ways other than taking in some weird fag that calls themselves a human and doesn't really know shit. The flip side would be that they themselves would feel little guilt for the crimes they've done and things they stole, forcing the player character into somewhat of a difficult position beyond plots like "Oh shit the world is ending."

Give the player 2 partners.

First one wants to be famous and admired for being a great and brave explorer/rescuer/detective/etc, but is actually a coward, selfish, and tends to lie. Doesn't like the player very much, but all of this changes over time.

Second partner is nicer, but has zero confidence in their strength as a pokemon (feeling like they're not very strong for a variety of reasons, they overthink this a lot), so they prefer to study mystery dungeons and map out the ones you visit (alongside lore of interest). Changes over time to become more confident in their other abilities.

Partner's abrasive and forced to adventure with you for one reason or another, doesn't believe you when you mention the whole "i'm a human" deal until some point in the story when it's mentioned by some legendary. Super kicking your ass in general is pretty normal. Bring along more wands and orbs, and don't be afraid to use them in a pinch. Know when to avoid fights if you don't think you can survive the encounter.

Super Mystery Dungeon.

Gates to Infinity has a great story but a very lacking gameplay. It's worth playing if you hack your console though, but not a whole 40 bucks.

On 2DS, you have only Super and GtI.

Supe has the best gameplay, but the difficulty curve is definitely more steep than any other games. The plot also goes sideways in the second half.

Gates' story is praised, but gameplay leaves much to be desired. There's also only ~144 Pokemon you can recruit. Some of which aren't Unova Pokemon (as if 144 wasn't forcing to abandon some already).

In Explorers, he comes at level 48 with 288 HP and 255 in all other stats. But in level 1 dungeons, he has 1 in everything.

In RT, it's one of the best choices for Level 1. It might not have the stats Zam has at level 1, but level factors heavily into damage dealt/taken, and Kecleon levels far quicker, with far better stat gains. Plus, it gets Feint Attack, Psybeam, a bunch of useful moves.

Though, admittedly, I'd absolutely like a partner that doesn't follow through with believing you're a human the most. I don't know, like if a kid IRL came up to another and seriously told them they used to be a Pokemon, they probably wouldn't take it face value and maybe be a little creeped out - so I'd suspect the opposite would more likely happen in the PMD then just instantly taking the protags word on it.

That said though, these all sound like great concepts to put in. Wonder if there's a chance Chunsoft devs look over these types of threads for ideas - probably not though.

Front paws could pretty much work as hands, and mons that are generally portrayed as quadrupedal can still walk/stand on two feet. Pretty sure one of Sky's menu backgrounds had a bipedal Phanpy, and in Super when you befriend Manectric he stands on only his hind feet for a bit.

In the first two games, Splash was mostly useless, but in Super, there's some use for it. You can use Splash for mobility in some cases, like if you petrified an enemy in a corridor. You can also use it for some strategies, like hopping over your teammates in a corridor when an enemy's in front of you, so that the enemy approaches your teammate, and your teammate makes the first attack, or use it to get out of things like Shadow Tag. It's nothing too amazing, but it could be fun to try out.

It doesn't move you like it does in Super, so it's mostly useless. In RT and Explorers the most you can do is hope you splash on a water/air tile to warp, but in Super you can use it for all the things I listed before, and even avoid activating Ditto items.

The only way was to downgrade using an hardmod or another, already modded, console.
You can still launch the HBL on 11.1, but you need a game exploit that you haven't set up.

The only thing I can think of modding-wise beyond the tools for Explorers and starter/moveset modding in Super is music modding for Gates/Super. Haven't actually looked around yet, but I'd assume the games use the same music file format that games like Mario Kart 7 do, so it should be possible.

I doubt anyone would ever want to/bother with that though. For Super, I'd probably just change Meowth's Theater dungeon music to something a bit more interesting, but since I play on cart it'd be a waste of time to do all that for something so minor. Might try screwing around with Gates sometime though.

Well, we can edit dialogues, scripts and menus in GtI/Super (though it still needs some reverse engineering).
We also can edit the dungeons in RT and Explorers. I edited manually the first dungeon in RRT (not BRT because I didn't want to bother extracting the files and repacking the rom, and I'm actually not sure where I can find that information specifically for BRT, but I assume it can be found or is otherwise easy to find if it shares the same structure with RRT, and I see no reason why that wouldn't be the case). My edit isn't really interesting, I just happened to find the information on a site and decided to try them out.
The same goes for Explorers. If you go to the Project Pokémon thread there's actually a lot of stuff documented, including the dungeons. The only thing that uses it at the moment is the randomizer though. It would be nice to have an editor.

It's probably the reason why I'm so salty over Super's story. The first half, while it did nothing plot wise, had a great character set up with a truly great formula to base the plot on. The second half ditched this set up entirely. The Society should have been dropped from the game entirely.

If you're annoyed by them now, they get worse when you get back from the future. Every few minutes you get flashbacks of scenes that happened only a cutscene before. Sky has it a bit worse in the early game too, with Spinda's Cafe stuff that gets overexplained and sometimes kills the mood (like the whole Project P crap after Apple Woods).
If you're not used to this kind of thing, then Gates and Super might not be your thing either, since the former also suffers from having a slow text speed, and Super loves to tell, not show, resulting in a ton of infodumps to get out of dumb plot points.

To the anon who was asking about Kecleon in Purity Forest: Kek works just as well as in Wish Cave; making most fights super easy. Just watch out for wall-phasing Shuppets with Screech/Spite. Parasects are no problem if you stock up on Chesto Berries beforehand and eat them in rooms with enemies offscreen. Unlike Wish Cave though, pic related was my moveset instead of the usual Lick/Psybeam/Screech+Fury Swipes.

...Honestly, this dungeon was a lot easier than I expected. But I guess that's also to be expected when you're using the best possible Pokemon for it.

The gameplay's poor and I'm pretty sure most people here like the games because of the plot (which is only great by Pokemon standards) or because they want to fuck a character in the games. All of the games can be easily cheesed one way or another due to how overpowered the player characters' abilities are and how weak the opponents are, and if you really suck that much, the game hands out candy and vitamins that boost your stats, so you can roid yourself out or use shitmons that could potentially give the game some worth if you used them without capping them.
There's plenty of better roguelikes out there; even the non-Pokemon games in the MD series have better gameplay.

Shiren already exists to fill the role of "babby's first roguelike", since many general rogue features are included in it while still making it easier for players who have never played a dungeon crawler before. PMD's still primarily Pokemon, and goes beyond making it casual for people to get into the genre. Using overpowered moves like Blizzard matters more than planning out what items to use and each of your party members' skills. In PMD everyone ends up having an identical role due to how easy it is to find stat boosters, and unlike an actual roguelike which usually punishes you for screwing up and discourages savescumming, the penalty for dying barely matters at all, especially since your levels and stats stay the same, and Super gives you Progress Devices to retry whenever you fuck up.

It being popular isn't an excuse for being easy. I was just saying that it's more likely that people get interested in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon because it's Pokémon. At this point I don't think they should change the way PMD works, but they should have some sort of "special episodes" working like traditional roguelikes (or even better, Shiren, if they have some npcs advancements), that has something that makes them different from the normal level 1 dungeons and maybe items/mechanics that can only be find there.
