Well in the random fillers or Ash-centric episodes, of course May like most of Ash's other companions in every series is going to be doing nothing or standing in the background. That's how it always is for everyone. What trace of personality does anyone have in the fillers where they're stuck to the sidelines besides a few moments?

In episodes she plays a role in she always had a funny and entertaining personality. She had a temper, she was arrogant, she was sweet/calm, she had an adventerous personality, she liked to eat, she was a big sister, etc.

Of course in random filler or Ash episodes she would be doing nothing but the problem with AG was that there were no good amount of episodes that developed May. She stayed the same undeveloped character throughout the entire series. Even Max got more development than she did.

That's not true at all. May in early Hoenn is not the same as the May from mid/late Hoenn, or the one from Battle Frontier.

May basically had the similar type of girly, energetic personality as others, but she was also stubborn and had a temper, she spent her run bickering with 4 boys (Ash, Max, Drew and Harley), she would sometimes make sarcastic comments similar to Misty/Iris, she would be happy and sweet, etc.

They made whole episodes with her learning to love pokemon, like the Mr. Briney Wingull episode, the one where she heals the injured Swablu, the one where she comes across her Bulbasaur, etc.

Hey! I haven't watched the anime in years and just chiming into this thread to drop my two cents.
I watched the last 10 episodes up to the most current one, pokemon is pretty easy to follow even if you don't know the monster types, you can just google them.
I have to say I do not appreciate the dark atmosphere and all the depression, it doesn't scream pokemon.
Ash seems more like a nerdy confident character and not the scruffy young adventurer from generation 1, kind of redundant having an expert protagonist when we have Clemont and Alan.
The red skies and dying? That isn't pokemon.
Its also weird how Ash's classic friends are nowhere to be seen in this world ending crisis. You have powerful friends, use them.
