Why would GF put this in ORAS if they were going to follow up

They were definitely planning a Z when ORAS was in development, and cancelled it for whatever reason. We're already seeing shit like the Zygarde formes being used in SM, so if they got far enough on the Frontier maybe we'll see it there.

I won't get my hopes up, though, Game Freak has burned me too much in the last few years for me to get excited for something that isn't 100% confirmed.

The frontier would look completely different with SM's visual engine so there wouldn't be much too recycle.

I was convinced that was a placeholder for future dlc. Possibly just scrapped for putting effort towards SM. Still a pretty upsetting cocktease.

The battle engine looks almost identical to Gen 6's engine, so I'd assume anything gameplay-related would be useable.
