The only time I turned off battle animation was when I was working on my living dex. Mostly b/c I was such of seeing blissey use its suicide move.

I understand turning it off for when you grind a specific thing, but generally when playing through the game it wouldn't feel the same at all without all the animations and effects

Takes too fucking long.

I typically play with them on for the first 30 mins or so, and then turn them off. I can only watch early route shitmons use Tackle/Scratch so many times.
