That Lapras is a PokeRide mon. They don't battle for you. You rent them to use as an HM slave, outside your party.

Pokemon used for PokeRide likely aren't used in battle.
You didn't use Rhyhorn or Mamoswine in XY, and you couldn't even encounter Pokemon while riding on Skiddo.

The Lapras is just a part of Pokemon Ride. You seem to encounter that thing on foot.

Lapras will be the early surf pokemon to just get across simple bodies of water. Sharpedo will be the faster, technical one that can jump and break certain obstructions in the water.

I have a feeling that Lapras will still maintain usefulness for fishing, as they show you doing it, while I doubt you could do so on the jet-ski sharpedo.

I'd imagine you get Stoutland fairly early as well, since it's just speed + an itemfinder, so you'll still have a reason to need it instead of Tauros or Mudsdale.
