I'd agree with you on the matter of waiting a bit to see what sun and moon will bring. Currently I'm biding time revising my early chapters (really need to put in serious editing time being somewhat of a perfectionist) while on the fence about writing a scene taking place in the new region. Either I'll include it in a current story I'm working on or start a new fiction there. Like I said, time will tell.

I've come close to having a "nope I'm out" moment on more than one occasion. Twice it involved my own works, but what can I say? Need to soldier on in order to improve at the craft of writing. As for reading, well that's another story. Far too many times to count have I Alt-F4'd out like a wuss.

I drop more Pokemon fanfics than any other type of fanfic due to the following

I always find a couple that meet the criteria whenever I look around. One can determine the average level of the writer from their summary and the best fanfic authors write as well as professional authors.

There are endless supplies of great books as well as fanfics so I can afford to be picky.

I would suggest you do so, as the act of publication is at worst a gambit to improve. At least you've earned the satisfaction of knowing you saw the project through to its end. Speaking from experience those things can haunt an author's conscience.

The dreams I have that I bother recording are the ones that are of high personal value and would not really make a good story unless I decided to write a sort of fictional biography of an AU!me in an awesome world where highways are made of crystal, wild deer and bulls watch over churches, and magnet railroads reach to low orbit observation stations.


Plus, for it to make a good story I'd have to have a Pokémon or Final Fantasy related dream, which hasn't happened in a good while. Last time it was for the RP I am in, I had a dream where my main Pokémon was Shadowified by one of the other players turned evil, in a church of all places. We ended up making it a plot. Real life and job got in the way of things but we still did some good stuff with it..

I got a question when it comes to changing perspective.

I notice how some other writers like cge do it where there would be a line through the paper that would mean a transfer between perspectives .
How do you do that? I have been trying to move away from having a entire chapter being from one characters perspective, and involving more the two main characters I have right now in each chapter.

Using AO3's limited HTML: <hr />
creates a neat break, allowing you to shift perspective or cut to a new scene.

On FFN you can add breaks like that using the Doc Manager. Upload a doc, select the uploaded doc you wish to edit and manually add the line by clicking the actual " --- " button. It'll say "horizontal line" when you mouse over it in the tooltip.

If you are writing using pastebin you can make do with using the variety of dashes at your disposal or use ///.

Pokemon: Fallout Green

I've brought up this idea before, but basically it's a the Pokemon-verse with a bit of a Fallout twist on things. The main protagonist is a pokemon trainer/wastelander who wanders and does oddjobs around the Kanto/Johto Wastelands. The "story" (mostly a series of vaguely connected events) begins with the main character losing most of his best Pokemon, his best gear (which includes a plasma pistol and a customized and upgraded Pip-dex with a Rotom assisted interface), and being shot in the head. He wakes up and finds his Delphox (named: Guy Phox) 'felt' the danger he was in and managed to get his trainer's body to a Waste Witch (hex maniac) and get him back on his feet.

And so the story goes with the trio attempting to track down the Trainer's stolen things and would-be killer, all the while running into the man oddities of the wastelands including Ghoul and FEV form Pokemon, fighting Team Raider, and making a few discoveries about how the world came to be in its current state.

Nukes flew because Mewtwo got pissy and drove the whole world into a nationalistic paranoia until it blew itself up. He's had over a century to come to regret his actions.

Mimiga when writing dialogue I suggest you revisit whether the way your lines would be said out loud sounds natural. There's level of formality and cleanliness to the way your characters talk that works to kill any sort of tension or emotion that would usually be brought out in a conversation. Specifically, in a high-emotion situation you should have characters interrupting each other mid-sentence, behaving irrationally, being overcome by stress, yelling/crying a lot, and using shorthand phrases when trying to describe something instead of explaining everything out pragmatically like some sort of callous robot. This is simply based off of how people act in real life and it works to show a reader rather than tell them directly about a character's mood.

Here's a paragraph from chapter 4 of The Marriage of Mew in particular that stuck out to me:

"Her voice was still not quite her own, but it was close enough to get out what she needed to say. "It was all a trap to capture Val. And it worked. Whatever's making people sick like this was the same that captured him. Thanks for the concern and water, but I really need to get back up there as soon as possible." When she tried to rise again, Audino quickly urged her back into place."

This to me sounds like Panne feels mildly inconvenienced by the loss of Val and the sickness she has to deal with, and getting back up there to find him is more of a chore than anything she's actually seriously interested in doing.

I suggest maybe stopping by the IRC sometime if you want some more direct feedback on this, I'm not sure trying to give an example like "this is what I would write instead" would really be appropriate here because the tone of any individual dialogue chunk has to match the rest of the work.

Sorry, sorry! I have a lot of trouble conveying dialogue correctly sometimes, my shit usually gets too mechanical like the rest of my narration and I don't notice. I feel as though the situation itself is one I'm a little unfamiliar with, and unlike the fever pitches of Ears, there comes times where I get lost in how exactly a character should be acting. I don't use IRCs, and I should be able to handle adjusting the rest of the dialogue on my own. If not, then I'd hardly have the skill to do my stories justice. Just need my friend and his loud vidya to go to bed first.

I can only be thankful that it's only a dialogue error, and not something that threatens the entire structure of the chapter.

Question for fellow anons. How often do you break while writing or reading? Are you a hardcore masochist that sits through the project until it is complete? If you're a writer, don't count editing time since that wouldn't be fair; I'm more interested in the creation process itself. Personally trying to hit the sweet spot of not burning out while also staying in the game.

As often as I feel I should. That varies with the work, since different works demand different thought processes and attention/planning.

I guess my answer also depends on what you mean by break. Do you mean, in a given amount of time spent writing how often do you stop? Because in that case, it is closer in line to my original answer. If you mean over the entire time the chapter exists, then my answer would be the same, but the size of the breaks would increase from a few minutes to days, unless I'm particularly vested in that chapter.

Avoiding burnout really comes down to recognizing your own limits. As you become more distracted and realize you're spending more time telling yourself to get on task instead of actually being on task, it should become apparent that it's not worth it to continue. Do something else and come back to it when you're ready.

If you want something closer to hard numbers though, I usually stop for about five minutes every solid hour of diligent work. Lets me collect my thoughts and skim what have for gross errors.

I think mega-evolution never really took off in fan stories because the requirements for it to work are difficult to write into a story or justify without jumping through hoops, but something like alternate typings could be added in without skipping a beat.

Have been already a thing for a good while, in a certain sense, thanks to sprite changes, so there's a lot to work with there and it's not really obstrusive. Some of the new Alonan variants are kinda too extreme a change (Ninetales) or too obtuse / stereotyped (Raticate) but that doesn't detract from the ability to play with the concept.

As for if these stuff gives new ideas, why yes, a couple of them, here and there, but at least mine are too undeveloped ATM to make do anything serious with them.

Alright, here's a few random notes before I return to my writing.

A) You seem to use a lot of dialogue. The latter half is like...50% dialogue. We really don't get a feel of the situation through dialogue alone, and we don't have pictures to help us, so you need more meat besides the dialogue.

B) You don't give us a really good feel of the characters. You seemed to try and jump right into the action without any real set up, and it's somewhat jarring. We know more about the attacker than we do than our POV character.

I think you might have som einteresting ideas, but I think you need to work on your execution of said ideas a bit more. But this isn't unsalvagable at all. I see promise there, but it isn't being realized.

I left a bunch of comments for the first half and then I hit the dialogue section and realized I'd be doing a complete write up of things I found off, questionable, awkward, etc. if I continued.

So I'll try to cover some broad points: too many ellipses. You really don't need them when you can use commas, periods, insert indications of pauses in speech ("He paused. A pause. There was a brief silence. He took a moment to collect his thoughts. etc.)

Your speech tags are incorrect in many places, outright missing in others. Sometimes you can get away without tags as a conversation is only happening between two people and the line breaks indicate quite clearly when one person stops and another starts. Sometimes you can even manage it with three, especially if each character is distinct and you know how they talk. In this case though, make sure there's commas following the ends of sentences when you're first opening a paragraph with dialogue.

This, for example, is incorrect. Put a comma there instead of a period.

There's a fair number of adverbs - you don't need them most of the time. I tend to use them far too often myself, and they don't need to be there. The context, dialogue and actions are usually more than enough to give you an understanding of how something is said.

As far as style goes, keep refining. There's awkward phrasing, wrong tenses, and uneven plot flow that makes this work, even out of context, bewildering.

One character with 5 seconds of screen-time in a trailer has inspired more writing in a dedicated thread to her than comes out of the write thread in an average month.

I used to have a story about my character where he was born in Unova and moved to Johto when he was three. He found an Abra and caught it and it became his best childhood friend. It never really went anywhere. I wanted to reboot it with Gen 6 but I never really had an idea for the story so I just dropped the idea of it being a character and decided it was just going to be me from now on.

So I posted a link to a scene I did in a fic, and got some good feedback.

I was wondering though, I got comments that told me that my main character was less memorable than an 'attacker' character that was also described.

It dawned on me that this is a good thing; i'm going for a style that slowly unfolds each of the character's personality as the story progresses.

Any tips on how to hold attention for that long to develop characters without boring the reader?

Have them do interesting things or stuck in interesting situations. If you don't think the character can carry interest, have the events do so.

At some point the characters are going to have to stand on their own, just for the inevitable moment the plot isn't running at 115%. That can fatigue the reader.

I wrote 2 chapters of a very shitty fanfic about a year ago. I finally feel compelled to rewrite and finish it. But I don't know what to add to it, which was one of the reasons i quit in the first place. It just feels empty other than the main plot. Maybe one of you could recommend something to me.
It focuses on a young treeko, who tries to enlist in Wigglytuff's Guild but fails, and ultimately joins the crew of a ship with questionable intentions. It's been fifteen years since the two heroes saved time. Trading posts have been opened between the villages that are dotted along the coastline.
I don't know where to expand it from there, i was thinking of perhaps the ship going down the line of piracy, eventually having the main character being the only person still loyal to the captain. Or finding/stealing demonic treasure and going insane on an island.

Yeah, that's kind of my primary writing weakness that I guess people let slide because it was two Snivy assholes talking to one another. When I try to dialogue, sometimes I slip back into narration mode and fuck up a scene that was supposed to be less diction intensive without emotion. But- that specific scene was supposed to have kind of a feel that it was just the same asshole talking with themselves, so I suppose it wasn't all too unsuccessful in that regard.

I know this feel.
I've taken some criticism in the too-intelligent vein, but I put it at a low priority. Partially because I write for my own region—a fantasy land where education is respected rather than derided as it is in the 'Merica—and partially because I would rather let a character sound a little too smart than to let a Trump-tier expression cause confusion over what was said versus what was meant. Suspension of disbelief is a resource, I'll buy a ten-dollar word with it to keep the intention of the dialogue clear, because even though it's a character action, it's in the story to convey the story to the reader, just like any other word therein.

Heck no you should not, there are 82000+ Pokemon fanfics on FFnet alone so you can afford to be picky about what stories you are willing to read. Out of all the stories I find with "interesting" looking summaries I end up cutting out around 60% of them almost immediately due to intolerably bad grammar/spelling. I maintain that anyone reading fanfiction should be a little more relaxed in their standards compared to professional published works- but it should never become distracting to the point of making the story unenjoyable. A couple spelling mistakes each chapter is something you should be willing to overlook, but systematic mistakes like consistently fucking up punctuation or not using paragraph breaks are completely unacceptable.

How do you wash a fire-type Pokemon?

I imagine for things like Vulpix and Growlithe warm-hot water is fine, and for stuff like Charizard you can just keep the flame out of water, but how about Ponyta and Magmar? Do you even wash them? Do you spray them with a flamethrower to get rid of dirt? Or use some other liquid, like ethanol?

Using a Rapidash-hair (Flareon hair works for pokemon with longer coats) bristled tungsten metal brush. Wear heat resistant gloves as the handle will get very hot. Apply small doses of water to problem areas and use the resultant steam to your advantage.

Fire resistant steam cleaning apparatuses can also be used on tandem with your brush. Remember, the steam will be very hot; wear your PPE!

I think Ponyta is ok to wash because apparently it is safe to ride on. Magical fire it can control whether or not it burns.

Magmar is a lava creature so I'd say he probably takes a bath in a volcano's lava pool. Same with Slugma actually. Would make for a fun experience if you were on cleaning duty at the local Pokemon shelter.

I imagine anything with Flame Body or similar abilities can just ignite their skin to clean dirt and stuff. Make sure to do so in a well-ventilated area to prevent any noxious fumes from the process building. Isopropanol spray can be used to accelerate the process but wow is that dangerous: only do so in a large clear area wearing fireproof gear with no nearby flammables. The isopropanol spray method probably works best for pokemon with Flash Fire, where they may not be able to ignite their own skin or fur but can definitely ignite this coating once doused.

Many fire types seem able to handle environmental water just fine, only have great trouble with water-based attacks. These can just be washed normally, though they may not like it.

Man, most people aren't going to hit that figure ever, even if they do write waifumon stuff. Like me, I haven't magically hit a high ass number despite having the poster children for waifumon in several of my stories.

Yes but antennae aren't reproductive organs, they are specifically for sensory purposes of a wide variety including touch. Okay so I noticed you're confused about descriptions. You're leaning toward the side of "too much", because if memory serves, you mentioned that the phone and soda can were on the nightstand in two or three consecutive sentences, and called the living room the living room three times within a handful of sentences. We know where the phone and can are, you don't need to tell us more than once unless you're writing five paragraphs about them. There are numerous synonymous terms you could use to indicate that you're still talking about the living room you just introduced.

Aside from mechanical hiccups like punctuation and grammar issues, another noticeable flaw is that Ray's excerpt had no point. It introduced his sty of an apartment (I wanted to mention this when you posted the previous chapters, but a nineteen-year-old is not by any stretch of the imagination a man. Make sure you remember his age so that you don't end up characterizing him as a snarky 28-year-old who just graduated high school last year), which would have made sense if not for the fact that the co-lead, the Gallade, will not interact with the space at all. Ray's lifestyle is important to reveal to the reader, but because his apartment won't actually be a part of the plot, it feels like you introduced this aspect of his character too early. It would have been more impactful if you revealed this while introducing his new apartment--like, maybe, instead of narrating the initial move-in, you show the Sinnoh apartment after he's gotten settled, or as he's showing his Pokémon around. It's not like moving to a new country will suddenly make the kid a good housekeeper.

Finally, the ending of Ray's excerpt was filler. Something needs to happen. Either conflict or resolution. Not "he just went about his day like a normal person". He is not a normal person. He is a fantastical story character. The story has to show him doing things. A story's plot is in constant motion, because that's what a plot is. And constant motion means constant conflict, however minor.

On that note, the Gallade's dream, where he expresses his decision (THE RESOLUTION TO THE CONFLICT INTRODUCED IN CHAPTER 1), should be where chapter 1 ends. That is the point where the "arc" so to speak is wrapped up. If you wanted to consolidate these four chapters into one, though, you would need a parallel conflict-resolution arc for Ray so he wouldn't come off as useless to the chapter's progression. He expresses vague interest in moving to Sinnoh, so maybe you could give him clearer reasoning for that. Example: At the beginning of the chapter, he expresses his distaste for his life in whatever country. Then his boss offers him a transfer, but he's not sure if he wants to take it since he's spent his whole life in that place. Finally, after returning to his shit tier apartment that brings him no joy or comfort, he calls up his boss and accepts.

Of course, that's just one suggestion. You could play it out differently if you so choose. As it is, Ray currently just seems to me like the snarky everyman who will probably corrupt this pure gentlemanly Gallade sonnu.

As for descriptions issue, I have to agree. I still have along way to go with that stuff.

Also I'm pretty sure I wrote somewhere that his apartment was more barren if anything, but a sty in the sense where there are still boxes all over the place due to him being too lazy to unpack them.

Also not sure if I have ever given Ray a exact age. There is something else I need to add in.


As for what you said having Ray go through a simmilar choice as the Gallade. I think you are onto something. I was really wanting to make him a bit more in depth, and not the snarky person he is. But at times I also feel like that sort of thing is more limited by my lack of skill when it comes to this sort of thing.

And as for the Gallade being "corrupted." I kinda feel like that is the route that is going to be taken no matter what. Reason being is the fact of him adapting to a new environment. And the fact that he is still rather childish at times.

Anyways thank you for your input, as I'm sure you already know I am shit at this and every little bit of input counts. And I will probably end up restructuring the entire story after this to make it a bit more cohesive.

Sorry if I sounded like a complete bitch. I was trying to be objective for the sake of just getting everything out there. I know you've given a few details of Ray's character that support him leaving for Sinnoh (he doesn't like his coworker, his manual labor job is kind of ass, he's not attached to his apartment so he hadn't unpacked) but these seemed a bit weak to me because there wasn't much to draw them together. His "this oughtta be interesting" attitude towards the move is counterintuitive, because one would expect a person in his dissatisfied state to instead feel something along the lines of "hell yeah I'm leaving, fuck this place". That would make the most sense to drive the story.

The things I listed are really all just minor details that you can tweak/add, but because they're all compounded they seem worse than they are. It doesn't matter if you lack skill at characterizing Ray the way you might want to, because this process is how you improve your skill.

Also the Gallade being corrupted was more of a joke. I never said I wasn't looking forward to it. But human society is... So many things. There are so many ways he could be corrupted. If you don't yet have a clear plan for tje next chapter and the course the rest of the fic will take, might I suggest brainstorming non-cliche ways that our sheltered boy will be warped by humans? I'm assuming that's the meat of the story, after all. And I don't mean for "warped" to be an entirely negative thing.
