Lucario was definitely pushed to become popular. And it worked. The push with Zoroark didn't(probably because it didn't talk) Lucario is popular with kids and older fans. I use to work with a 23 year old guy who has a Lucario tattoo. I'm indifferent to Luke, but I can see why people like him.

He's the 18th heaviest character in the game.

Aerials are fine. At low aura he can combo with Fair extremely well, and at high aura Bair and Uair can kill very early. Fair and Uair can also hit through some stages when recovering, which is always helpful. He doesn't have anything in the air to poke with from afar or to approach with though

Smashes are only decent with aura, you can combo into upsmash from aura sphere charge at kill percents, down smash is excellent for reading rolls and forward smash has a ton of range and power. But without aura, they aren't worth using

Aura sphere is undeniably the cornerstone of lucario's moveset. Aside from the charging portion allowing you to combo into bair and upsmash and being a great shield pressure option, the charged projectile itself is a great punish for poorly timed air dodges, and good for opponents trying to recover. Of course its highly telegraphable when you through it spontaneously from the other side of the screen. Treat fully charged aura sphere how you would samus' charge shot. Low % aura sphere can be used to scare opponents into shielding so you can grab them, which is one of the only things lucario can do at low aura

Lucario's real problems are as you said, floatiness (depending on how you look at it) and an awful counter, as well as an extremely shitty approach and poor out of shield options. You cant treat lucario the same as other characters on the roster because he's very weak without aura, so you have to rely on poking and getting throw combos with uthrow, fair, fair, etc. until you hit higher percentages. Once you hit ~50%, the projectile part of force palm becomes one of his best moves, allowing you to annoy any character with its sheer range. Then at high percents, stray hits do ridiculous damage and knockback, aura sphere charge becomes huge and hitting it guarantees an upsmash or back air for very early kills, and aura sphere projectile becomes much scarier

With you there OP. Just like probably 99% of casuals, I had Lucario on my team in BW2 and he was my literal bro/ace mon. I'd have so many close matches where I'd put him out last and he'd just barely win me the match.

I've never had more fun in a pokemon game than with my Lucario from BW2. I don't care what people say, it'll never detract me from my fondness of Lucario.

It was in XY, with the introduction to mega lucario that made me not want to use him anymore. I'd rarely put him out and those rare times I decide to, it absolutely stomps everything. I even saved it for the very last mega battle with diantha and it 1-shot her mega gardevoir, most anticlimactic thing to happen in the whole game.

Lucario's counter is pretty good against characters that use predictable projectiles a lot. Villager, DH, the Links..

When activated you can choose if go where lucario is facing, and the whole slide kick goes far and makes him invincible the whole way. When finished you dont have almost any endlag either, so if you end up in front of them you can just grab or utilt.

Also worth pointing out that Forward smash is good for killing even at 0 aura. In fact, I think it's what you should go go for if the opponent is over 100% and you just got killed. Sneak a smash attack. At worst you'll get punishef, get aura and new kill options will open up. At best, you'll kill them super early.

Yeah I think Fsmash would be Lucario's only viable kill move with no aura. You can't combo your aura sphere into bair or upsmash when you're fresh, and they would lack power without aura, and I think uair only gets strong around the 50% mark

I found it interesting that he was in Zeros top tier. And in the video he didn't even mention how strong lucario's shield pressure is,and how good force palm is as a spacing option when you're at mid-high percents.
