I like the guy and I have his books. They have a lot of sweet sketches of stuff he never includes in the final pics, plus he just seems like a cool dude.

Even if you don't like his takes, he inspires a lot of artists to try and do versions themselves. I've seen several 3d renders of his designs that people use in portfolios, it's cool.

I think he does a great job on nearly all of his designs.

I don't really understand why /vp/ gets so triggered with his interpretations. It's fairly obvious that the artist is trying to make each pokemon as if there was some sort of real life counterpart to explain its existence.

Sure, floating crabs may not be real, but crabs are more real than floating sentient magnets -- and I feel that the idea to turn magnemite into a crab was an ingenious decision that took quite the imagination.

You don't have to like everything he does, but why waste your breath getting butt blasted because he didn't just draw a hyper-detailed pokemon, and instead tried to give them a real world analogue?

Yes, I'm aware of that. But I'm talking about something like a decorator crab, a crustacean explicitly known for sticking shit on their shells for reasons of camouflage. It doesn't take much mental gymnastics to think of a terrestrial version that sticks magnetic ore to themselves, resulting in their magnetic powers.

Currently, Arvalis' version also gives me difficulties imagining just what the fuck his version of Magnezone would look like. Whereas if it were based on a decorator crab, you could have all the magnetic ore fusing together and trapping the crabs within a permanent outer shell.

My point being, if he was really dead set on turning magnets into crabs, he didn't go far enough with his redesign. Even his official description for that image didn't bother coming up with an explanation, he just said the equivalent of "kek they're hovercrabs, I dunno". It's lazy no matter how you look at it.

The Zapdos is jut a big yellow Kingfisher, the Raichu is a Jerboa/jumping mouse, and the armadillos are... armadillos with reddish upper torsos.

I remember some magazine here calling them the legendary dogs (after the legendary birds) and I just accepted it. I was 10 years old so while I thought Raikou looked like a tiger, if a random magazine told me they're dogs then they're dogs. Years later when I finally got internet access and got used to online forums I saw a random gamefaqs thread calling them "gerbils" and that was when I finally learned there was any controversy at all.
