Gyms are definitely integral to the formula, as where as spinoffs aren't. Otherwise, you'd be able to collect all pokémon without having to beat a single gym. Not to mention defeating gyms is what enables your pokémon to use certain abilities. It has been that way ever since the beginning, so you can't say gyms aren't integral to the formula. AND it would be a monster collecting game with no battling at all.

You misunderstand me. I'm not saying BATTLING isn't integral, I'm saying the idea of gyms are. Of course we'll need some type of boss battles to give the game high points, but there is no reason the main series games need to be restricted to a formula of "defeat 8 bosses housed in gym buildings while also battling bosses on the side that are evil, then at the end fight 5 bosses in a row".

The trials/kahunas thing is a breath of fresh air.

Plus it's the lore behind the gym and league battles what makes them so charming, the competition and achieving a big title. Without that it's just empty battling, something many people would feel it's just "meh" once they get it over with. Now I'm not saying you're not entitled to feeling you need innovation around those features, but it's what got most of us keeping up with the series and probably what will continue to do so.

But... the island trials still have lore. It's just new lore. The trials are a rite of passage in the region's culture, which kind of seems more interesting to me than "defeat these powerful trainers because... because is why".

Seems to me that a lot of people already feel that about gym battles- just look at XY's forgettable gym leaders; the only one everyone remembers is remembered because she exists to push Lucario even more.

13 leaders distributed over very few islands... yeah embracing just as much variety doesn't seem doable to me. I understand if some people feel gym battles have been burnt out for them, but saying a lot of people feel that doesn't make it true. And just because the concept behind gym leader characters wasn't executed properly, doesn't mean people want that feature to be scraped either. If you really say those fights happen "just because", then I'm sure you don't understand the competitive lore that gives it meaning. Giving it a different one (especially if it's based on a "rite") is forcing content onto people who already play for the most part for the sake of competing.

Actually this is a good thing that they no longer give you a number on story progress like Badges did. I assume the idea behind not making a big deal about completing Trials, like previous games made a big deal about collecting badges, is because we're going to get a lot of Trials to complete.

If it was comparable to badges, they'd just list the quantity of of whatever reward you do receive for completing trials or list how many Totem Pokemon you've beaten. Instead they removed the story progress numbering entirely, which suggests that the number of Trials and Totems must be vast or not the actual keys to progress in the story. Maybe something will pop up in the post-game which will get numbered on your save file.
