I remember trying to raise a Gyarados in Pearl a man did he really pay off. He stayed top of the game throughout most of my journey after he evolved, was able to overcome Wake's and Cyrus' Gyarados and even managed to faint Cynthia's Garchomp. That intimidate and dragon dance really helps you out in tight situations and aqua tail is not bad, but eventually you'll get the waterfall HM. Man Gen 4 really did Gyarados a favour with physical and special split.

The one I used in Alpha Sapphire started with Teeter Dance thanks to DexNav. Payed off when it evolved and I could FIESTA at any time, but not having ANY damaging moves for so long was a serious problem.

Unironically, Super Secret Training is the easiest way. I actually just begged someone in the Wi-Fi thread for a Water Stone in exchange for Pokerus. I evolved it too early and had to rely on TMs, but Scald, Energy Ball, and Ice Beam are good moves anyway.

I used Aron in XY after getting it from a wonder trade before my second badge and he was helping to carry due to Aron and his evos' massive attack. Just switch him out when against water or fire.
