My only guess is they don't want to spoil Serena is going to Alola. The expectation from the fanbase is for Serena to leave like past girls, but if the writers are keeping the end of region cast a secret it might be because she's staying.

Anyone remember they revealed Iris/Cilan like 4 weeks before DP ended, letting everyone know Dawn/Brock were leaving? They did the same thing revealing Dawn early before AG ended, although back then people weren't sure if she was replacing May or not.

For the past 2 series, the Team Rocket vs. regional team has been sorta shafted. In XY&Z it pretty much has been referenced 3 times (most notably in XY&Z14) and they've done absolutely nothing with it so far in the finale arc. But in SM, given how Team Skull doesn't seem to be taking on the same "take over/destroy the world" motif as Team Plasma and Flare have, I'm fully expecting Team Rocket and Team Skull to basically be like rivals to each other.

First of all, I really hope they introduce Team Skull earlier in the series than they introduced Team Plasma/Flare. It worked in their respective cases since B2W2 Team Plasma and XY Team Flare didn't do much till the end of their games. Team Skull seems to be more of a recurring, "man that's annoying that they did that" villain. I can't see these gangsters actually trying to do something on the scale that any other team besides Team Rocket did. Anyways, what I'm trying to say is, Team Skull and Team Rocket should be like rivals to each other. I'm almost thinking they could go for a Butch and Cassidy sorta thing with them.

Note how memefrog went toe-to-toe against the Champion's mega waifu and did pretty well until they passed out, but then the next two episodes the frog lost to his rival and a gym leader. That's sorta what happened in the league too. XY&Z38 was just an "off-day" for them, sorta like how XY&Z26 and 27 were.
