Platinum, BW2, ORAS. XY if you want new pokemon, though you can probably find them on the GTS.

maybe don't play Unova games back to back

Also story based if you're wondering.

Platinum is highest level curve and slowest

HGSS as a weird/dumb leveling curve but should be pretty fine

Yeah a 3ds can play a ds. You could probably buy a flash cart. Nintendo isn't going to make money

You could play ORAS, but it's "arguably" worse than Emerald.
