They need to touch the model coloration up a bit more still, though. A tad more saturation and slightly higher contrast, and they wont look so washed out. They could use light texturing here and there as well. Some models have textures, which look really good, Sewaddles leave's come to mind. Charizard, for instance, has a slight texture on his wings and flames.
Lastly, whenever there's a pokemon game on stronger hardware, I really hope that the generated outline is done with a smoother, messy, photoshop esque line, ala the official artwork.

It's really hard to make accurate good 3D models of anything compared to sprites.

Even 3D animation starts to look dated and creepy after a few years, if not immediately on release, whereas 2D doesn't really age.

Half of them have plastic fur for literally no reason. They need to do a shitton better than Pokken to be worth the realism, I'd prefer cell shaded any day over the current Pokken offerings.

I think the one's one the right are a bit too dark, though I still prefer it to the left. The left just looks like it's under flourecent lighting. They should be more colorful and vibrant, though the same colors as sprites are a bit far.

I think the textures would look better if they were halfway between the colourations of Gen VI's textures and Gen IV or V's sprite colours. You could try take a sample of those two colours, colour some squares in Powerpoint or something, layer the two on top of each other and make the top one 50% opaque, then take a screenshot and use the colour picker to register the new colour. There's probably a less complex way of doing it though.

GO uses the same models, same textures, same animations. The only thing that's different is the shader. They really should tweak it a bit. It looked fine in Kalos with all the pastel background colors, but significantly less good in Hoenn and Alola.

They've already reused the models and animations in Pokemon Go. These models are for the long haul.

I don't mind reusing animations if they can slowly add more as time passes. We can thank X and Y for getting all the basic outlines done.

Honestly, this is going to feel like a gen 6.5. Same models, same hardware, I know we'll never see a jump like we did when we went from gen 1 to 2 or 2 to 3 ever again but I was kind of expecting at least SOMETHING to wow me.

The same can sort of be said about Gen 5 being Gen 4.5.
If you look at the base sprites without the animation you'll notice most of them are taken from Gen 4. Like Charizard for example. That's the sprite from Diamond and Pearl.
From what I can tell the biggest leaps come from hardware changes. I'd say Gen 1/2's leap to 3 is similar to Gen 5 to 6.
