I didn't really like Hugh personally, the whole ''they took my sister pokemon!, I WON'T REST UNTIL I END EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM!'' seems a little too exaggerated, though it was nice to have a ''rival'' who wasn't interested on proving he's better than you.

The only thing wrong with gen 5 gamewise was Iris and Hugh. That and everything that's wrong with Pokémon in general and a lot of things wrong with gen 6

The only thing I hate about Gen V, including the Pokemon, in it is a mentally-challenged 5 year old girl becoming the champion.

Hugh needed some kind of change to make his story interesting. He started out mad and swearing revenge on galactic, then continued being mad and wanting revenge, then went out and got revenge and lived happily thereafter, the end. Was that a worthwhile arc? What a waste of a revenge-obsessed character.

He also really put you on the sidelines because your stonefaced blank slate can't be allowed to be involved or passionate or anything. Hugh would have been the best main character to play as, just taken as-is, and would have been maximum bestest if that involved decisions on how far to go in your wrath and how much your qt little sister means to you.
