If you look up the numbers for the older season you'll realize they were literally 4-5 times better than they are now, which is a pretty big difference.
The anime is nowhere close to getting canned because Pokemon is still an extremely lucrative franchise and the anime is essentially a weekly commerical for said franchise. If anything they might try to change some stuff if they will continue to fall, but for now they got a pretty big bump following Ash's loss in League Finals. Whether this is a 1 week coincidence or a long term trend remains to be seen.
Either way 3.4 is very very good for XYZ, it might've had like 5 or so eps with better ratings all season long. Guess kids are starting to tune in for the conclusion of Flare arc.

Greninjash's rivalry was more about Shota and his Sceptile anyway. When it lost to Charizard, it basically felt like nothing because they don't even have a rivalry going. The story was only between their trainers while their pokemon don't seem to give a shit about each other. On top of the Shota rivalry, Greninjash's story is about being the savior of Kalos as well.

Meanwhile, Ash's Charizard has always been about challenging the biggest and baddest pokemon out there (especially fellow Charizards) in a dick waving contest. You can perfectly imagine Ash's Charizard's reaction to seeing another strong Charizard. Which makes it a perfect set-up for fighting Alan who wants to be the "strongest mega evolution trainer" with his super special Charizard.

And they brought back Goodra exactly for what? To get GUILLOTINED like a chump with all his friends watching? It's story could have ended in the swamp so it seemed so unnecessary.

Alan shouldn't have participated in the league considering he already beat an E4. He would have still followed Ash since Ash has a strong Charizard. Ash's Charizard could have lost twice against Alan and win against him in the Team Flare arc. Greninjash vs Sceptile could have been the league finals and then proceeded to become the savior of Kalos. We could have had it all but instead, we got jack shit.
