I still don't really get where the X and Y guys fit in the lore hierarchy.
Ho-oh already seemed to cover the whole eternal life thing just fine before we had Xerneas, and Yveltal's Pokedex entries just create more questions than answers.

I figured Ho-Oh was more of a "Rebirth" pokemon. Rebirth implies death with renewal afterwards into something better. This is why it's old info said that seeing it brings years of joy to whoever saw it. Ho-Oh existing is a win-win situation for everyone.

Xerneas and Yveltal are equally terrible. Death with no renewal is desolation. Life without end forever nomatter how much you suffer is hell. These two need each other (and maybe Zygarde) as checks or everyone loses. They aren't stand-alone. Technically they're both BAD GUYS.

And that's the difference!

Actually, I'd say Xerneas and Yveltal have MORE behind them. There's AZ, the Zygarde Catastrophy currently happening in the anime, and the fact that the main plot of X&Y revolves around Xerneas and Yveltal (depending on version).

I don't recall Ho-Oh having nearly that much.

It's not so much "Jurisdiction" so much as being embodiments. Think sort of like the bird trios who embody basic elements but can call on those elements to influence the world around them (ex: zapdos calls a storm forth).

I don't have any info on why they are, but I like to think that Arceus tried something new and it didn't work as planned so he made Zygarde to put a stop to what would have been sheer madness.

The books in the library, the dex entries, multiple characters talking about them, and even a regional history tied to them complete with an immortal created by them that you get to meet in game aren't exactly small potatoes. Pokemon doesn't talk much about specific mons. The fact that the XY legendaries got this much is saying something.

You even say it yourself: basically nobody talks about Ho-Oh and lugia in the games. No books, no lore, nothing.
