It's less "you only need this many" it that "playing too many energies will fuck you over". If you ever played theme's all energy/all Pokemon brick hands, you would know this. If you swap out one of those energies for a professor's letter and some max elixirs, suddenly you have less dead cards and more useful ones.

Two copies of your basic easy to setup 120 attack beater with a one-energy 20 attack ping before that, and 2 copies of Manectric line as a decent backup attacker.

Comparatively, burning spark is terrible(aside from Stunfisk, ironically enough), and Ampharos/Luxray take too much setup. You might as well play Brilliant Thunder (the Heliolisk one), lose a bunch of prizes and drop Luxio for 120 damage for 3 prizes.

You have a loose definition of "playable." While Yugioh actually rewards skilled players infinitely more than Pokemon does, in order to compete against any competent deck you will need something that is at least tiered.

A playset of Shaymin as of this time period will cost you $240. But you can build any deck with them. Whereas if you want to build a deck in Yugioh, you may spend $240 on the core of the deck, but aside from generic hand traps, spells and traps the deck core is nontransferable. And then there's the extra deck which may or may not translate well across decks. I know my Blue Eyes extra deck certainly does me no good if I want to play Kozmo or PKBA.

I think it's something more along the lines of Megas being new and difficult to get rolling, so they added in shit like Elixer to ease the process whereas when the meta was dominated by Stage Twos, there wasn't as much of a threat to get them rolling since the opponent was probably biding their time on a Stage Two too.

Didn't lose much, but Garbodor is probably going to be a lot more common post-rotation since it's pretty much the only card other than Xerneas and Greninja that survived rotation. You'll have a hard time doing anything against an Ex deck running Garbodor.

Nothing that affects Greninja really. The name cards are Blacksmith, Battle Compressor, and Az. There's other stuff, but those are the big ones. They hurt any Fire deck, Vespiqueen and Night March (which were all rotated anyway), and Shaymin/Bats.

Those are the only cards that come to mind in terms of what rotated.

Oh, and Aromatisse for Xerneas Break/Mega Gardevoir rotated too. Those decks are still viable without it, however. Volcanion/Flareon decks are fine without Blacksmith as well, but they did benefit from it greatly.

I'd argue it makes those decks much much much MUCH less viable now.

I run a deck with Xern right now and I have won pretty much solely due to Aroma's ability to shuffle my limited energy more times than I can count.

It's not always relevant but it's really nice to have the comfort zone that you can have 3-5 energy on different mons and still be okay with energy.

Pick one, man. Either it's viable or not.

Aromatisse is very nice to have, but losing it doesn't completely kill the deck. The only real benefit from Aromatisse comes from being able to move energies around to use Max Potion, spread energies out to either keep your opponent guessing/to make use of Fairy Garden, or to remove them from a pokemon that's about to die. It's certainly a nice thing to have, but the deck is usable without it.

That all being said, Mega Gard and Xern Break are both very slow decks in comparison to things like Mega Rayquaza and Mega Mewtwo, which both have similar mechanics and are likely to be the two biggest decks post-rotation. Without the ability to shift energies around, the deck probably isn't worth running since even the loss of 3 energies when a Mega Gard dies will kill whatever damage your remaining Xerneas or Gardevoir could do in retaliation. Unless you want to sacrifice another Xerneas and an energy just to use Geomancy one more time, the deck has a very hard time recovering after losing even one pokemon.

I think with Aromatisse, yeah the deck had a chance. Without it, however, it dips just below the line of viability. Might still be good in Expanded, though.

From my experience playing Volcanion. Even if you get to Lysandre a problem card, for example a Garbodor, you'll probably have trouble switching out of baby Volcanion and with Garbodor online your Volcanion ex's can't help in knocking it out so you'll just lose on the spot.

The only cheap deck left right now is pretty much Yanmega Break. It's fast, but it isn't great at closing out games, so it relies on Vespiqueen to hit for big numbers late game. Verspiqueen, however, got hit when Night March got the axe.

Besides, Garbodor is about as common as Aids in the 80s right now, so Yanmega and Greninja are risky as shit to play right now. You have to be able to kill them in one hit with a Lysandre to stand a chance. With Vespiqueen as weak as ever and Yanmega without an ability, that deck dies to Garbodor. Greninja is in the same boat unless you randomly throw in a Mega Glalie or something. Don't do that. I just said Glalie because it was the first heavy hitter for Water that I htought of.

Just take your NM deck to Expanded. There are those challenges going on right now and the majority of players don't have a standard deck as it stands, so expanded looks exactly like standard did a week ago. You probably won't even notice a difference. I'm halfway through the Expanded challenges and haven't seen a single Plasma card in an opponent's deck yet.

You can look to the past to find that answer. Lysandre's Trump Card was designed to soft counter Night March and it did so pretty effectively, allowing item lock decks to completely nullify Night Marches damage and then continue the lock so they couldn't compressor again. It also created a different mega cancer in the form of Toad, but that's beside the point. Karen is a more effective card n countering NM than LTC considering it doesn't shuffle in the compressors. Since NM saw almost no success with that meta, I doubt it'd see much play with Karen around.

Not too many. As a blind guess, I'd say like 10-15 depending on the actual things you have. You only need like one Hoopa. The rest is shit like skyfield and winona.

It loses the fact that all of its low HP targets are all rotating. Splash damage and sniping is good but not when everything you're up against has 180-220 HP. You'll most likely fall shy of an OHKO and then you'll get shit on. Pokemon Ranger negates Shadow Stitching as well so you can't even spam that. And Garbodor shits all over this deck and you have no ways to counter it.

The deck had its prime for a reason. But an EX-centric meta with a splash of Garbodor is not a meta it can do well in.

For the physical game? Definitely. Packs are a scam. For the digtal game, your most efficient way is buying a bunch of 10 cent codes on ebay or something and either trading them or opening them yourself depending on how many packs it is. Like, 200 packs is only like 20 bucks, that's an excessive amount and you could buy 8 shaymins and still have 40 packs leftover, so feel free to open those.

Take Out was incredibly nasty back in the DP era.

It was originally a multiplier, then it was switched out to a +X damage system with the DP era. PCL switched that out for the original multiplier system with HGSS that's remained since then.

Bouffalant? It can go with just about any deck, as far as I can tell. It's not the crux of any deck, either- it's a support Pokemon for murdering large amounts of EX Pokemon very quickly. 2 seems to be sufficient, but 3 would give you extra insurance- Muscle Band/Fighting Fury Belt lets it easily 2HKO every mega I've seen thus far.
