The happiest medium would be using regional forms to fill in the role of "obligatory" bird, rat, bug, etc, and filling the Pokedex with a fair amount of new mons. Fair being less than 50.

Mystery Dungeon is seriously not that good. I'm not even comparing it to the main game.
