So why exactly was the whole alchemy theory discarded? For the starters I mean. It made much more sense than Edgeowl, El Tigre and GayBoy.
Why would they throw away the whole alchemy theme, which is obviously present in the games&starters?

The alchemy thing was never present in the starters. People just latched onto the brimstone theory for Litten because its stripes looked sorta similar.
Only the XYZ trio, the Sun/Moon duo, and Magearna have anything to do with alchemy.

Apart from the sulfur symbol on Litten, I'm not seeing it in the starters. It seems to be contained solely in the box legends.

It wasn't discarded. Did you think the starters' designs were really going to be primarily based on something as obscure as alchemy? They're still doing RPG classes.
