Pick Totodile and box it.

You can get a Slugma, Mareep, or Wooper egg in Violet City if you talk to Primo in the Pokemon Center (look up what words to tell him). Slugma is the obvious choice here considering you can get the other two right after Violet, but can't get Slugma til Kanto.

A female rock or fighting type can help with Whitney.

You can get a free Steelix in Olivine.

Wild Magnemite between Ecruteak and Olivine have a 5% chance to be holding a Metal Coat, if you want to be able to get Scizor before going on the boat to Kanto.
