Headbutting for a heracross but I just keep getting Ekans and

Certain trees will never spawn Heracross or Aipom etc. You need to move on to a different tree after five tries or so.

On route 42 in Crystal, trees that don't have heracross will have Ekans and vice versa. So I'm trying every tree until I find Ekans then moving on

If you want heracross go to Azalea town. There's a couple of headbuttable bushes on the far left side just below the entrance of the woods that I've encountered them more than anywhere else.

It's based on your id number somehow, then on how far the tree is from the northern or western of the map. Bulbapedia has some crazy explanation to game it, but I don't understand the fuck it says.

Mostly when to at all, really. The Elite Four and maybe Clair I consider true walls. Kanto is just as strong as Clair so they're not too bad I think.

So long as you're not nuzlocking, route 45 is great for Clair. Victory road isn't bad for the E4, neither is route 26/27. It's just that this is the only game that's a literal grind. I find it best to only use 3 or 4 for the entire Johto half, they all end up mid-forties by the time you get to E4.

Holy shit, I hope he's exaggerating. He was Nuzlocking so that probably limited where he could go, but that's still pretty bad. Even Dragon Quest 1 isn't this bad.

I'll train 3 in Johto (current party: Ursaring 33, Scyther 31, and Jynx 37 (I fucking love Crystal's improved encounter tables)), then in Kanto I'll add two more (thinking Murkrow and Electabuzz), and then after I beat all the gyms and I'm training for Red I'll throw in my last one (tyrannitar?). I usually don't do a team of 6 anyway, because I love completing the dex and I hate deciding which teammate to box.

That being said, I've beaten Red with a team of low 60s and the E4 with a team of high 30s. Before gen 3, levels didn't matter as much.
