You don''t need to be smart, you just need to experiment with the damage calculator. The thing you care are either to outspeed and kill something, or to survive a especific number of hits and kill something. You play around on the damage calculator and you get the hold of it. A good way to start is to see if your favorite bulky pokes can survive nukes (like Fire blast from MChar, Hyper voice from sylveon/MGarde, shit like that) and can KO back or at least do decent damage. Then do the same for all the tier you wanna play the mon in, or at least what you think can give you problems. For example, Garchomp can survive some Ice beams when you give him some bulk, and has enough raw power to hit back decently even if not full invested.

That is how they make their spreads, but most of them can be optimized, or personalized for expresive purposes. Pokemon is a game of numbers, so you just need to learn them. It is important to know you odds so you can win more (for example, some spreads will say you have a 6,25% chance to be OHKOed... you need to know that in most cases you survive so you can do a good play and stay).


If you are playing on cartrige, check at least if you can survive MKangaskan Fake out+Sucker punch; and if you can survive primals. Check forother common megas like mega fug too. You will most likely not survive them all, but at least know which ones you can and mostly, what you can survive. After you know this about the mons you use, you can play around with the numbers and who knows, maybe one of your spreads will become the smogon one.
