Never played it but I heard it was decent but overall worst PMD. Anons have said it's good for $15-20 game but not worth $40. I have heard nothing but good things about the characters.

Back when I first played SS, I used to love to take my Politoed with me to Mt Mortar at night just to enjoy the atmosphere and do a little fishing. Johto overall was pretty comfy as a region. Makes me wanna start a new SS play through again.

Sky, easily. You can even give yourself custom starters if you know what to do on an emulator. Wooper even gets healing from grass moves with a special item, and prevents explosions

Personally I reccomend sky to you, though super is also great. I remember getting explorers of time release day so it's a bit special to me but most consider it the best story and character wise. Honestly other then gates you have no bad choices.
