I'd actually really like that if it doubled as an evolutionary method. Maybe there could be certain benefits to it, like re-encountering them will give them ultra-rare moves or slightly juice up their IVs.

Something that implies their time in the wild gave them experience, even if it's as small as "this Pokemon is now 3-5 levels stronger."

Definitely seems like it would be more of a nice realism touch than a mechanically useful thing. I don't dislike the idea but people releasing Pokemon outside of masses of breeding rejects is pretty rare
