Yes, there's a list of moves that assist can't trigger, found here http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Assist_(move) . So basically he set up his Gengar with Destiny Bond, Thief, etc. and his gardivour with helping hand etc. The only move capable of being called by assist for him was explosion. Ya I think both his purugly and persian were choice scarfed, ensuring they'd go first while maxing att/speed ev's. There's a reason normal type pokemon don't get access to explosion normally, 250 + 125 (stab) + 187 (helping hand) = 562 base power move against my entire damn team, killing anything that doesn't resist normal.
