A hard reboot of the anime is in order. Have Ash win the Indigo League, and switch to Ethan for Gen 2 during its anime. They can keep switching protags each season and have them return in Gen 6 to get their megas.

I would say it's rather Sailor Moon/DBZ and Astro Boy/PreCure. Sailor Moon is the iconic anime for young girls while DBZ is the iconic anime for young boys (both at their time), Astro Boy is pretty much the foundation of anime and appeals to the Retro watchers, while PreCure is a huge mahou shoujo in the present and appeals to the more otaku crowd.

They chose them pretty well and lay them even better.

Heartcatch Precure is a great place to start if someone is new to the franchise. What people are learning though, is that over the 20 years since the Anime's airing, Ash has NEVER won a league tournament in his life.

This is the #1 thing that should've been done. New region, new cast, new starter.
They don't have to actually win the league each single time - a complete newbie doing it every season would be retarded - but making the semis or so would feel pretty good considering it'd be a character that just started their adventure a short while ago.
